These huge downloads are going to kill my modem; neither cable nor DSL
is available here. I tried DLing the Combo Updater last night, so I
could update both the iBook and my Quicksilver. It ran for over five
hours on the 117 MB package but quit when five MBs from finishing.
Firefox refuses to resume and merely starts a new DL instead. Any
suggestions? If these Updaters keep getting larger, I don't see how I'm
going to be able to update. :(

Try an FTP client? Or Software Update?

How would you do that? I thought the updates were only available
via http.
However, one could use something like wget, which will do the same
thing as an ftp client, but only for incomplete http downloads (i.e.
resume where it left off).

How about using a satellite service. Outgoing is still via modem but
incoming is via the satellite. Usually this service is comparable in cost to
DSL or cable.
Here in my area of Canada, the outlying areas are being offered line of
sight microwave links for Internet service. A friend of mine was asked if he
would set up a tower on his property and so they give him a discount on his
service.

One problem with that is that I have to do it twice (once for each
computer) but I may have no choice as you say. Firefox is also supposed
to resume but could not seem to get reconnected with the Apple download
site.
But the weird thing is that this has happened to me very many times
lately--- not just with Apple downloads and not just with Firefox. The
download (usually more than 15 MB) gets almost to the end and then
quits! The modem I am using is a v.92 in my Airport Extreme. iCab
usually lets me resume but not always; sometimes iCab just thinks the
download is complete when it isn't. Is there something more global that
could be causing this kind of a problem? This also just happened to me
the other day with AOL trying to DL their upgrade. No, AOL is not my
ISP but I have to maintain an AOL account for the firm for which I work.
Anyway, the download stopped within one MB of finishing and would not
resume. AOL is sending me a CD for that, however. Two things I know
with absolute certainty are that (1) the larger the download, the more
likely this is to happen; and (2) I have *FAR* fewer problems overall
after updating with the Combo Updaters as opposed to Software Update---
that is if the darn thing downloads OK.

The Software Update preference pane has an option to retain the package
for reuse. Select the package(s) you want and then choose the desired
install and retention option from the Update menu.

The delta updater downloaded via SW Update may not be suitable for
systems other than the one it's downloaded on.
Downloading the combo updater from Apple is the most reliable route for
multiple installs.

wget is IMHO the dial-up user's best friend. I use it all the time for
large downloads such as OS X combo updates. You could also use curl, but
there are fewer arguments to remember with wget. (Some HTTP servers
don't allow resumption of downloads--Dantz (Retrospect) comes to mind,
for one.)

Thanks for responding. The satellite internet service here is very
expensive and extremely poor. Our community is currently testing
another internet arrangement for residents but, unfortunately, we are
not in the test area and it could be a couple years before we are
included (if the test goes well). We are about 35 miles from a very
large city but our more immediate, very hilly area is surrounded by
several state forests and that is the problem. I do have an excellent
connection for a modem but it still takes like 4-5 hours to DL 100 MB.

Well, it's like this: I dunno. Other than using Software Update to
either download and keep, or download and install updates, I've not
tried to resume them. I know FTP allows "resume", so I suggested it.
<shrug>
But let's see... <ftp://ftp.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/> ...
redirects to <http://www.info.apple.com/support/downloads.html>, great.
I don't see an appropriate ftp site now. I'm bummed.

I think it is unfortunately that Apple no longer distributes updates
via <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://FTP." target="_blank">FTP.</a>
