I think this began with 10.3.3 but i'm not sure.

I often record ideas on a sony clie voice recorder that saves
WAV files. I import them to my desktop and rename them my
scheme naming convention. If I had five noted today they'd be
named 04.18.001.WAV thru 04.18.005.WAV.

My final step is applying an apple script that hides the extension,
so I end up with files named 04.18.001 - 04.18.005.

Since 10.3.3, the first file (001) will not hide the extension.
If I rename it 006 it will hide the ext. If I change it back to
001 i get a dialogue asking me if i want to change to ext. to 001.

It all worked flawlessly before.

Any ideas?

Change your scheme and use underscores instead of a character that has
a specific meaning to the OS?

Nah, that's talking crazy talk!

well, that does work, but i like the way i've been doing it
and it worked until recently. something changed somewhere.

the system seems to think that .001 is an extension like .WAV.

is there a place in OSX that defines extensions?
can i edit it?

Confirm, please:

You've got a file named "04.18.001.WAV" and the extension is visible.

When you do Get Info, the Name & Extension section shows the same name
that Finder does.

The "Hide extension" checkbox is checked.

You change a single character from a 1 to a 6 (in Finder, I presume),
and the ".wav" disappears.

The Get Info field now reads "04.18.006.WAV" and the box is checked.

You change the 6 back to a 1 (again in the Finder view) and the system
asks to confirm the change to an "001" extension.

I gave fake example names before. Here's an actual name i'm using.

I have a file named 227.30.001.WAV.
I Get Info, check the Hide Ext box, close the Get Info window and
the .WAV ext is still showing.
If i open the Get Info window again, the Hide Ext. box is no longer
checked.

I then change the .001 to .006 and Get Info and check the Hide Ext
box and everything works like it should. I can hide ext and it stays
hidden.

If i now change the .006 back to .001, i get a dialog box asking me,
"Are you sure you want to change the extension from ".WAV" to ".001"?
It gives me two choices: Use .001 or Keep .WAV.

If i tell it to use .001, it deletes the .WAV. If i tell it to use
..WAV it deletes the .001 leaving me with a file named 227.30.WAV

The system seems to think there is an extension called .001.
Before 10.3.3 it didn't think this. Is there a place to edit the
list of acceptable extension names?

I looked at all my old WAV files and all of the files ending in
..001 now have the .WAV ext showing. And, by the way, if i Get Info
on them, their hide ext checkbox is checked even tho the ext is
not hidden.

You may have to use some other separator than "."

File a bug. Seriously. <http://bugreporter.apple.com/> Do it now, before
you forget. Include your response up above.

http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/

..001 etc are used by (at least this) file splitter. Could be why the OS
refuses to let you use it. 001 would need to be present for a split file
to be re-assembled. Strange it allows the others.

update

it seems that the latest version of MacPAR deLuxe has defined
..001 as an extension

I got rid of it and went back to the previous version and then
trashed the /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.6B.csstore
file and everything works the way it did before

I suppose i could write and ask the developer why he introduced
that extension but it's working now and i'm a pretty lazy person
sometimes.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Let me guess... MacPAR is a file compression/decompression program?
In that case, it probably opens .RAR files. Usually, RAR compression
splits large files into smaller ones and can give the parts sequential
extensions: .001, .002, etc... As far as PAR/RAR extraction goes, I
prefer UnRarX.
