My 12" Aluminum Powerbook decided it doesn't want to keep its RTC
going. If I power down or even just do a reboot, it resets to 1969.
During bootup (with verbose messages on) it pauses for about 10
seconds after a few lines of output, then spits out a message that
it can't access the RTC.
I've poked around Apple's support site and can't see any remedies. A
parts listing for backup batteries has N/A next to the 12" G4 PB. Does
that mean it doesn't have one? And if not, is the clock saved in NVRAM?
I've also searched google for some indication what I can do.
I tried to reset the power management unit by the instructions on
web site (something like SHIFT-OPTION-CMD-POWER for at least 5 seconds,
still no go.
It's not the worse thing that could happen to it, but it's certainly a
PITA. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Like, if it indeed does
have a backup battery, could I get it replaced at an Apple store while
I wait?
btw, I did have a habit of putting the unit to sleep for long periods
of time, and then realizing it died when main battery conked out, so
if there is a Backup Battery, I probably killed it doing that...

ok, I found this page on apple's site...
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58445" target="_blank">http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58445</a>
Says 12" G4 has no backup battery.
So any ideas why my laptop all of a sudden, after 7 months of use,
decides it can't remember it's time/date settings?

Here is the syslog message, in case anyone is out there... :-)

I did a google search on that and got a few foreign language queries,
but doesn't look like any answers. Starting to look like a warranty

Yeah, it sounds like a hardware failure to me. Luckily it's at least still
under warranty.

I think there's more to this. If you search for "RTC did not show up"
in Apple's support forum (which I later did), you get quite a few
messages from people who are having the same problem. Seems like
something in the 10.2.8 update really messed up some 12" powerbook
G4s... :-(
I'm heading overseas next week and don't want to send my baby off for
service, so it'll have to wait until I get back.
Maybe I'll get lucky and Panther will fix it, if it is a software
issue and a bug in 10.2.8 didn't somehow damage it... It's kind of
hard to believe it could, but heh... who knows.
thx for reply. Was wondering if anyone was listening! :-)

I love talking to myself, anyway, perhaps someone googling will come
across this and it helps them...
With that in mind, installing Panther fixed my RTC problem. I'd say
something with 10.2.8 really stinks. (sigh of relief! :)

That's good to hear. Did installing 10.3 break anything for you?
Still waiting on my $19.95 upgrade...

No. So far I've installed it on an older AGP G4 (450 mhz), an original
LCD iMac, and a 12" G4 PB. I've done one archive and install update
and the other two were straight upgrades. Only real issues so far was
X11 wouldn't run (because Panther installed the new one in
Applications/Utilities and the older one was in Applications and I
guess first in search path) as well as Mail.app not dealing with
self-signed certificates (help says to drag the cert icon from warning
dialog box to desktop and launch it, but mail.app hangs as soon as I
try to drag the icon).
>Still waiting on my $19.95 upgrade...
It's sweet, I love it.

I get excatly the same message on my Alu12" running 10.2.8 and it
takes a lot of time to boot too!... and my PWB also loose its
date/time settings :-((
Did you get any interesting info about this problem? I'd like to solve
this before upgrading to Panther.

No, unfortunately. You can probably test to see if it's a software
issue by booting your Jaguar install CD (without reinstalling). To do
so, set your date/time correctly, insert the CD, then restart and hold
down CMD-C to boot from the CD. Follow the steps but don't go any
further than where it starts to do an upgrade. In the installer
program, there should be a menu entry to show the log. Do that, "show
everything" and there should be some "syslog" messages in the window
that include the date/time. If it's correct, then that's a good sign
that it's not a hardware problem, since it survived the reboot to boot
from CD.
When I installed Panther, I was very concerned about the date/time. I
wanted to ensure it was correct before starting the install since I'm
not sure how well the OS would run if all its files were dated a few
seconds from epoch (12/31/69)
