I recently purchased two 30-inch Apple Cinema displays from Apple to
incorporate into my Final Cut Pro editing system. One monitor can take
the display up to 2560 x 1600 while the other one can only go to 1280 x
800.
The following information was posted recently to a similar information
request: The 30" display requires a dual-link DVI port to run at full
resolution. Only one of the DVI ports on your graphics board is
dual-link. The optional Quadro FX 4500 board has two dual-link ports.
You could add a GeForce 6600 board to get another dual-link port, but
it is lower performance than the GeForce 7800 GT. (You can't add
another GeForce 7800 GT, even if you could find one, because it uses
extra power, and there is only one power connector on the mother
board.)
So my question is: How does this help ME? Why did Apple decide to do
this without addressing the problem before production rollout? It
seems Apple should have considered putting two similar ports into the
quad G5, knowing that video producers will run across this situation.
Now I'm wondering what Apple is going to do about it. Any suggestions
in the meantime or will I have to purchase a $500 ATI Radeon x1900 XT
graphics upgrade kit to fix Apple's blunder?
