Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hardware>misc (more info?)

I want to purchase an Iomega internal (ATAPI) DVD burner (dual format) and
install it in my G4 (Sawtooth 450MHz, running Panther OS X 10.3).

A friend is offering me a good deal on the drive and I can't afford
anything else I've seen currently on the market.

Iomega does not indicate that this drive is Mac-compatible, neither does
the Apple site.

I want to burn DVD's and CD's using this drive, and the only software I'll
be using is iTunes, iDVD and iMovie (latest available versions).

This should work, right? Isn't the hardware essentially OS-neutral?

Or is there some firmware compatibilty issue that may cause me problems?

The drive can be found on Iomega's site:
http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/11876.html

Thanks for any help you can offer!

-Matt Stafford

Yes and no.
Matt, I just popped in my Iomega DVD- Superdrive (all format) internel
in my Sawtooth G4 (400mhz) with Panther that I got for Christmas and It
works fine. The only reason Iomega says it doesn't support the drive is
because the software included is Windoze only.

The bad news:
Apple does NOT support the drive with it's software yet. So you can NOT
use ANY of the iApps for burning CD-r, DVD's, etc.. You'l have to get
third party software. I have used Toast for years and it works great.
Much better the the iApps (IMHO).

Iomega also ofers a download of Discribe for OS X ($35) at this URL:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.iomega.com/software/discribe.html" target="_blank">http://www.iomega.com/software/discribe.html</a>

The Iomega drive is a good one. I love it! I've been using for about
three weeks now without a hitch Perahps Apple will fully support it
sometime in the future.

Hope that helps.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'm pretty certain iomega doesn't actually make any optical drives -
they just rebrand others but I don't know who's. I can say with
certainty that this drive will work with Toast but whether it works with
iTunes and iDVD will depend largely on who actually makes the drive and
if iomega does anything funky with the firmware.

head over to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/" target="_blank">http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/</a> and see if you can find
anything there. BTW - I've seen Pioneer DVR 105 units for as low as
$135 recently.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

What about the Pioneer DVR-106 multiformat SuperDrive? I'm assuming
this _will_ work with iApps as well as with Toast and cdrecord. And
of course I'm also assuming that read-only apps like DVD Player will
work with this drive, that the auto diskmounter will handle data dvds
properly, etc. Are these valid assumptions? These units are pretty
cheap now and I was planning to get one soon...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
