Are you plugging the mouse and keyboard into the Mac after it's already
running? If so they won't be recognized and you risk shorting out the
ADB chip.
If the mouse and keyboard are not working when the computer is started
up then it may be a bad ADB circuit on the motherboard and not worth
repairing.
You can probably buy a Mac IIcx or better very cheaply on eBay.
