If I've got a Firewire bridge board with SATA connectors; in case I
want to connect an ATA (IDE) drive to that board, do I need a SATA to
ATA converter, or ATA to SATA converter?
I assume these boards only go one way.

Simple answer yes.

Yes they (usually) only go one way.

Yes you need a converter. Don't worry much about what to call it. What
you call it and what a manufacturer may call it could be opposite. Ie.
what you call an ATA to SATA converter a manufacturer may call it a SATA
to ATA. Look for what you need, ie. ATA HD to SATA controller.

Adapters like this have an arbitray from and to relationship. There is
no "right" direction.
