Post subject: Can't Access Internet using Hotel Wireless Network
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>virtualpc (more info?)

I stayed at a hotel which had high-speed wireless Internet access. I
was able to access the Internet using the AirPort card in my Titanium
Powerbook G4 (OS 10.4.5) while running Safari but not when running
Virtual PC 7.0.2 with "Virtual Switch". I could see some text
indicating the web site had been contacted, but then a "could not load"
error page would appear. When I changed to "Shared Networking", the web
pages would load but very slowly. When I started the Cisco VPN client
to login to work, access got even slower, and I was unable to load most
web pages or check email. Access to my work requires the use of
BlackIce, which may be complicating the issue.

Back at home, I have no problems accessing the Internet and work over
my home wireless network using Virtual PC and "Virtual Switch". "Shared
Networking" gives very slow access and some web pages time out when
loading.

Why would the hotel wireless network be incompatible with Virtual PC's
"Virtual Switch" setting while my home wireless work just fine?

Thanks, Will

Disclaimer: I'm just guessing..

Might have something to do with DHCP in the hotel. With Virtual Switch I think the Virtual PC is going to want to get an IP address in addition to the IP address the native operating system is using (OSX). However, since it will be using the same wireless card, the MAC (Media Address Control, sometimes called "hardware address") will be the same, confusing the DHCP server.

In Shared networking the Virtual PC is using the same IP address as OSX.

Thanks for the reply, Steve. I've stayed at some hotel chains where the
wireless network behaves like my Airport Extreme (uses NAT to provide a
unique IP), but this last hotel apparently did not. Would a wired
connection have made any difference?

Access to internet - I don't know what happens, but VPC has never correctly accessed internet. The prefs are set to : in the mac, "share network" (not virtual switch) and inside the PC, it is : "use DHCP"... What else could be done? Big thanks!

Internet access in VPC - I've been using VPC without problems for many months and have had internet access through my Mac connection. A few days ago I realised I had no access to the internet despite internet being available on the OS X and the connection icon showing in VPC...

OS 9.2.2, VPC 6.1, eMac G4, no internet access! - Just installed VPC 6.1 with XP over it. Went flawlessly but can not access web pages by name. Have read through several postings and have: 1. redirected gateway IP to eMac's 2. redirected DNS server's IP to eMac's 3. changed 'networking type' to 'share...

Internet access with Virtual PC? - I am looking for a fix to a problem... I need to use a web-based application that only runs on Windows. I'm thinking that VM7 might be the answer. Can anyone tell me if I can run IE on VM7 and access the Internet -- I have a DSL hookup to my Mac G4..

Can't establish Internet Access with VPC 7 - Sorry if this question is redundant, I tried to solve my problem by reading previous posts in the group, but after spending 3 hours last night trying various solutions, I still cannot get VPC 7.01 to access the web. Here's the details. I'm running OS X..
