Since installing the new version of CUPS, jobs sent to the Adobe PDF
printer fail with the message "/usr/libexec/cups/backend/pdf800 failed".
I've run all the options in Printer Setup Repair, including resetting
the printing system, but no joy. Anyone any bright ideas?
TIA,
Paul.

Yeah. Get rid of CUPS 1.2.x and go back to the version which shipped with OS
X. I've put various versions of 1.2.x on my machines at various times, and
always had major printing problems which did not happen with machines not
'updated' to 1.2.x and which vanished when I pulled 1.2.x.

That's why I thought it would be safe! Silly me...

I had a horrible feeling somebody was going to say that. And as there's
no uninstall option, that means an Archive & Install of the OS, right?
Paul.

That's what I had to do.
There's a version 1.3 beta on the site which might/might not work better.
Apple announced they'd bought CUPS on the 11th, the beta showed on the 13th,
perhaps it actually works. You could try it and find out. The worst case is
that you have to do an Archive & Install, which is what you have to do now.

As I understand it, the printing GUI in Tiger is based on certain files
having certain attributes. One example of this is that Tiger expects
certain lines to be in the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file. There are several
lines that need to be changed in order to turn printer sharing on/off.
If the system does not find specific lines, the process will fail.
I believe that Apple may do some other customizing of the stock source
code to fit the system. If you take a look at some of the files
included in the v1.2.x releases of CUPS, you will find things like a
serial and parallel backend. Apple has never released these. We don't
have a parallel port on the Mac. The serial backend does work for
certain printers with the right adapters. Then again, if Apple released
it, they would have to support it.
In more general terms, Apple developed Safari and incorporates it into
the OS. You will fail miserably, however, if you try to use the version
of Safari from Tiger or the new beta version in a Panther or Jaguar
installation. Ownership does not equate compatibility.

And indeed have now done. And I think I'll give that beta a very wide
berth...
Paul.
