Hi there,

I came across an old (c 1991) Mac CD, and would like to be able to
view the movies contained on my PC. I can retrieve the files off the
disc, but when I play the ovies the forst few frames play, then the
video window goes blank. This is using Quicktime 5. I believe the
movies were Quicktime 1.0. Does anyone know of a way to view these
files without having to rebuild an old Mac?

You should be able to watch these with any modern computer - if its a Mac.
The problem is not the QuickTime version but the file format.

ciao

Martin

Thanks for that. I guess I'll have to find a Mac then.

Martin.

p.s. If the file is retrievable on a PC, and I have Quicktime,
shouldn't the movie be able to play in Quicktime? Aren't the codecs
the same between the mac and the PC?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hi,

Movies created qith QT older than 3.0 contained a resource fork
in which part of the movie data was stored. This is why you will
never be able to play these movies on a PC, since a PC doesn't
support resource forks. If you want to play the movie, you have
to copy the movie to a Mac directly or make sure that the
resource fork is copied correctly.

If the movie file is on a floppy disk, find a Mac with a floppy
drive. If this is not an option, use software that reads Mac
floppies on a PC to create a disk image (MacOS format). Copy
this disk image to a Mac and open the image with Disk Copy. You
should be able to play the movie from the disk image.

The file is not retrievable on a PC. If you try this, either the
resource fork will be left behind or you will end up with two
separate files containing either fork.

Best,

Mark
