Can the Apple remote control volume and next/previous track in VLC,
iTunes, Real Player, Quicktime Pro, etc? If not, is there another
remote with a receiver that can (plugged in to USB I guess)?
With screens getting bigger and bigger, allowing for multi person
watching of movies, the remote's usefulness becomes more needed. Once
30"+ screens are more of the norm, even more so. >> Stay informed about: Apple remote questions |

New Guy, take a look at Remote Buddy (see VersionTracker). Remote Buddy
is an application with an optional driver. It can map gestures on the
remote (eg, press vs. press/hold) to any key and specify different
mappings for different applications, works with any application and
supports some remotes other than Apple's.
It has pre-configured behaviors for some applications, and these can be
further tweeked.
I think it's fab.

It works in apple's apps, I think it won't work unless the author
specifically makes it so. just tried in VLC and it doesn't work there.

an app may exist.

Well, if you have a bluetooth Mac and a bluetooth phone or palm, you can
always use Salling Clicker (though I'm not sure about RealPlayer).

With an iPhone or iPod touch, you can do a lot with iPhone Remote:

Keyspan has a collection of remotes.
<http://www.keyspan.com/products/homepage.2.productList.Remotes.spml>
The last two seem the most versatile. >> Stay informed about: Apple remote questions |
