Use of the "restore" disc... yes, you'd loose all your updates.
Use of the "install" disc... maybe, depending on how you use the disc.
The "restore" disc simply erases the hard drive then installs the exact
software installation as the Mac had when it came from the factory.
The "install" disc can be used to manually reinstall a customized system
configuration on a freshly formatted/erased hard drive. It can also be
used to modify an existing installation without erasing the hard drive.
Depending upon what software you may be modifying, you may or may not
wipe out any software updates for other applications.
