Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>misc (more info?)

I am running OS 10.2.6 on a Ti laptop. I seem to be having a problem with
a couple of application that put the name of the application as "AOL" in
the top menu bar next to the Apple. The two applications are LetterRip
admin and EIMS admin. I do not currently have AOL installed on this
machine, but I did at one time. Is there a preference or something I can
fix or erase?

Thanks,
Jeff

That's extremely interesting. I suspect a problem in one of your
LaunchServices caches. Try using a cache cleaner program (and then
restart) and see if that fixes it. m.

Very strange!! All I can offer are a few guesses.

First, if you have a second admin account set up on the computer - good.
If not, go ahead and create one now. (Preferences...Accounts...make it
an admin account). Log in with that account and try running the
offending programs. If AOL doesn't come up we know the problem is local
to your account. If it does come up we know it is global.

If it is localized then the problem is probably located in your Library
folder - probably the prefs or application support folders. Do a search
on AOL and see what pops up.

If it is global then probably the problem is located in the global
Library folder - again the prefs or application support folders. Search
for AOL.

If the problem is localized and you can't find anything with AOL a quick
solution would be to transfer your data to the new account and delete
the old one. Also, if the offending programs have uninstallers you might
try using them and then reinstalling the software.

Be sure to post the results - as a tech I collect problems for future
need.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Any recommendations for a cache cleaner program?

I downloaded Cocktail and deleted the cache files. Still no luck. I
have been messing around with this problem most of the morning and
still no luck. I am not sure where OS X is getting the AOL name from.

Thanks for the idea. I tried that program, and it did not seem to fix my
problem. I really do not understand where OS X is getting the AOL name
from. I have removed all references of AOL on the system, but it is still
grabbing it from somewhere.

It was also a problem on a newly created admin account. So, the problem
is a global one.

I have since cleared out the caches in the /Library/Caches directory and
the /Users/jeff/Library/Caches directory. Both have done nothing to fix
the problem. I have deleted the prefs file for both the LetterRip admin
program and the EIMS admin program. Nothing, so far, has rectified this
problem. I really don't want to reinstall OS X on this laptop, but it
might be my only fix.
