Post subject: Application Quits when Printing
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>printing (more info?)
Any application I try to print from (i.e. Firefox, Word), immediately
quits when I try to print something. I tried to install a printer two
days ago, but installation couldn't continue. What should I do? How
can I restore my drivers back to the way things were before things got
messed up?

It sounds like the applications are crashing. So the first thing I
advise you do is look at the crash, console, and system logs. They can
give you clues as to what is causing the problem.

Viewing Crash, Console, and System Logs

1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.

2. From the Console menu bar, select File > View System Log.

3. From the Console menu bar, select File > View Console Log.

The system log will usually give you an indication as to what is causing
startup issues. The console log can show issues you experience after you
are logged into your user account.

If a particular application is crashing, you may find a crash log in
/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ or /Users/you/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/.

(You can post logs here for help, but feel free to send the logs to me if you need help understanding them. I'll be glad to take a look and tell you
what I see.)

If all applications are crashing when you try to print, there is likely
to be a problem with your printing system or default printer.

What you should probably do is a "Reset Printing System" operation,
which deletes all of your defined printers and cleans up some other
details. You will have to add your printers back again.

The details vary between Mac OS X versions.

In 10.3 and 10.4, you need to run Printer Setup Utility (if I remember
right) and look for this command under its application menu.

In 10.5, it is hidden in System Preferences > Print & Fax. You can get
to it by Ctrl-click on the list of printers.
