Taking pics using key combo: command-shift-4 gives me the the
crosshairs and greyed-out dragged box, but when I release the mouse,
nothing seems to happen...
10.4.6 on G4-400-AGP
IIRC, on previous OS's the captures used to show up on the desktop as
"Picture 1...2...3..etc", but now they don't. I've searched everywhere
on my startup drive for them, but no joy...
I have the nagging feeling that I'm forgeting something obvious...

In Panther 10.3.9 I get a fairly faint camera click sound and the
picture ends up on the desktop with the name Picture 1.pdf
If it is not showing up there then search for Picture as the number will
increment.

Nice tidbit, but perhaps he hasn't even typed "Picture" in the
Spotlight box yet.
That "click" is extremely faint, and could easily be missed.
I may just be assuming cluelessness since there has been an epidemic of
that today.
No lookee. Just askee.
Is there an avalanch of switchers due to the processor change? >> Stay informed about: Arrgh! Can't find my screen captures! |

(As I mentioned in my OP, I had already searched my HD before inquiring
here in usenet...)
Tried that terminal command, and get this response:
05-017:/ mAppeal$ defaults read com.apple.screencapture location
2006-05-09 12:36:59.130 defaults[315]
The domain/default pair of (com.apple.screencapture, location) does not
exist
Sorry, but I don't know how to interpret that...
Is there a pref or plist I can delete to reset the default?
thanks,

I did read the post, Jon.
However, if I was knowledgeable enough to realize that:
"The domain/default pair of (com.apple.screencapture, location) does
not exist"
is equivalent to:
"no value for that key",
I certainly wouldn't have to be crawling the newsgroups for
supercilious replies like yours, Jon.
thank you *ever* so much,
-j
P.S. the problem remains unsolved, despite the terminals' retort... >> Stay informed about: Arrgh! Can't find my screen captures! |

"Does not exist" means that option hasn't been set, so as Gregory said, the
snapshots should appear in the default location: your desktop.
Maybe the screen capture shortcut has been disabled? Try checking System
Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Screen Shots.
If that doesn't help, check the desktop's Get Info box (control-click or
right-click on the desktop, Get Info). Under Ownership & Permissions, it
should say "You can Read & Write"; if it doesn't, fix it.
Also make sure you're not making a silly mistake, like pressing too many
keys or using the wrong mouse button. If you accidentally press the
control key too, or use the right mouse button, the snapshot will be placed
in the clipboard, not a file. >> Stay informed about: Arrgh! Can't find my screen captures! |

Sorry to hurt your feelings. That was not the intention. However, the
connecton whould not be too hard to make. And - please remember that
everyone here is answering out of their good will and on their free
time. No one is obliged to even _try_ to help.
What I did was to point out (perhaps even superciliously; it's a family
trait, sorry) that in a setting like usenet it pays to try to do your
homework before asking the next question. I don't always, and it usually
earns me a quick rebuttal from netizens considerably more outspoken than
I.
Good luck with your problem, I hope you solve it.
