Where can I find a tutorial which will tell me how to download
binaries?

I foolishly sent my eMac DVDs to Apple for a media exchange. My
external CD burner cannot read DVDs and I thought that sometime in the
future it might be necessary to re-install from it.

For some reason Apple refuses to accept my "Proof of Purchase" cupons.
They will neither exchange my discs nor return them.....

I cannot afford to go out and purchase replacement discs so, much as I
hate to do so, have decided to download from alt.binaries.mac

Thanks in advance.

John

I tried that once, but when the cheese dried I could no longer move
the mouse. ;-)

I would tell Apple that they either return the DVD or provide the CDs.
Anything else is thief.

I once sent in for the new system OS upgrade service after getting
refurbed system. I sent a check for $20. They said I didn't qualify,
_BUT_ they cashed the check anyway. I was willing to accept did not
qualify, but I was unwilling to accept taking my money too.

Call them up, ask for a supervisor. Tell them that you want your DVD
back or you want the CDs, as anything else is thief of $129. Keep
bumping up the chain until you get satisfaction.

There should be a FAQ that you can request at the group in question.
Most binary groups have them and they will likely suggest specific
software for all stages of posting, downloading, prepping, assembling,
whatever. In a Mac group they might even suggest Mac software.

Given you can download binaries already you might still need something
akin to the following:

MacPar deLuxe - to fix or replace missing or incomplete files, if PAR
files are included in the post.

Jigsaw or Split & Concat, to join back together files that have been
intentionally split up before uploading.

I have a custom Tcl program to download a newsgroup, then run uudeview
to decode them, and xv to view them. I can specify suffixes to include
or exclude, subject lines too...this avoids downloading series already
gotten, or to skip movies, etc.

Giganews not has 50 days binary retenion.
