I bought a copy of 9.1 from OtherWorldComputing (rather my friend bought
it). (Might be an OEM disc.) However, when I tried to install it on my
friend's 233 MHz iMac (the Bondi Blue machine), I got a message from the
installer indicating that the machine's firmware was out of date and had
to be updated. It said to look in the "CD Extras" folder on the Mac OS
install disc. Now:
1) I upgraded the machine's firmware long ago with the 1.1 firmware
updater.
2) There is NO firmware anything on the "CD Extras" folder on the 9.1
install disc.
At this point I'm stumped. I have been unable to find any information as
to why this won't work or what specific firmware is needed. There is a
1.2 firmware updater, which I downloaded, but it says it's for iMacs in
a NETBOOT environment, which doesn't apply here. There's also a CD
firmware updater.
Ideas? Anyone? >> Stay informed about: Bondi Blue iMac 8.1 > 9.1 firmware problem |

Can't tell if this might apply to your machine...

The 1.2 update is the last version. Any higher-numbered iMac firmware
updates will be for slot-loading CD iMacs. The CD-ROM drive firmware
update is supposed to improve the CD-ROM drive's performance with
unbalanced CDs which cause the drive to vibrate. It does, but it only
upgrades a very poor situation to a poor one :oP
I can only suggest trying the 1.2 updater anyway. I never had any
trouble installing Mac OS 9.1 or Mac OS X on my Bondi Blue iMac, but I
had probably already done the 1.2 update before I updated the OS.

Thanks, by the way, this machine does have a slot-loading CD. It's not
like the one on my own flat-panel iMac, but it opens from the front.
It's the one where you seat the CD on the small spindle in the center of
the tray.

I wonder if that's the problem? I'll try that next.

This one requires 9.1 to be installed on the machine. Which is the
problem, since I can't install 9.1 without a firmware update. >> Stay informed about: Bondi Blue iMac 8.1 > 9.1 firmware problem |

That's a Tray Loading iMac, not a Slot Loader.
Your post about getting a 9.1 CD from OWC that "might be a OEM disc"
makes no sense. OWC doesn't sell the grey OEM discs, they sell the
after-market white Universal Install CD's, which are the only ones which
have the firmware updates in the "CD Extras" folder. Obviously the OEM
discs wouldn't need to have the firmware updaters on them, since the
machines that came with them were a late enough generation to have them
already installed.
Download and install the 1.2 updater. The 4.1.9 updater applies to the
slot-loaders only, and do not apply to the rev. a-d tray-loading iMacs.

OK. It's a tray loading iMac.

Well, it's gray, not white and does not have the firmware updates in the
CD Extras folder. I mean, I have the physical disc.

I did download it, just haven't installed it yet. I'll try (tray) that.

As an update I'd just like to let the newsgroup know that installing the
1.2 Firmware updater (downloaded from Apple) allowed me to install the
9.1 system software. By the way, the 9.1 install was one of the easiest
I've ever done.
