Can anyone help.
OK not strictly a problem with my Mac but maybe someone's had a
similar problem or is an expert in this field.
Over the past 4 years I have been connecting to the net via a 512K
broadband line running through a Netgear DSL Modem Internet Gateway
DG814 from a G4 apple Mac running OSX. Not the fastest line in the
world agreed, but reliable and suitable for all my needs.
A month ago I lost my connection to the net. After a lot of farting
about by my ISP they informed me that changes at their end meant I
should change my Multiplexing Method from LLC based to VC-based. This
did indeed make my connection 'live' again but with one difference.
Whereas I was getting a download speed of 45-54kbps I was now only
getting 15-18kbps. My ISP checked the line and reported no faults and
have in fact increased the bandwidth to 2mb. However I am still only
getting 15-18kbps. I've rebooted, unplugged, reset all to no avail.
I've been around a number of download sites (adobe, apple Microsoft)
testing the download speed on random available downloads and still get
15-18kbps.
Speedtest.net reports that my line has a bandwidth of 1541kbps (2mb),
my router recognises that the line is 2mb but I'm getting nothing
near
that. My ISP has told me I may need to change the router but I'm not
convinced. Would this change to VC-based require some further changes
to settings that the ISP is not aware of?
Any advice greatly appreciated even if it's a suggestion of another
forum. >> Stay informed about: Broadband bandwidth problem |

Thanks for the replies so far. Greg, what do you mean by plugging
directly into the Mac? Currently there is a line out of the router
into the phone socket and an ethernet cable out the router into the
Mac. Is there any way of testing the router to see if there is a
fault? >> Stay informed about: Broadband bandwidth problem |

By router, do you mean modem/router? If not, there should be a way to
connect directly to the modem.

I have a 6 year old SMC router. But, it does need to be replaced. I'm
on Comcast and the router isn't compatible with their Speedboost option.
It seems to max out around 4.2Mbit/s on the WAN to LAN.
So, as to the OP's question, yes a new router might not be a bad idea.
But you could try plugging in straight from the modem to your Mac to
test it out first. If you get the same slow speeds, then it's not your
router, it'd be something else...

I've checked speedtest.net (see the paragraph after the above in my
post)
To recap: 'speedtest.net reports that my line has a bandwidth of
1541kbps (2mb), my router recognises that the line is 2mb but I'm
getting nothing
near that. ' >> Stay informed about: Broadband bandwidth problem |

Interesting. I'm still using my original Netgear from 1998.
At work we just had a Linksys fail after about 2 years, though.

I'm a little confused there. You say speedtest.net gives you good
results. How are you connected when you use their tests? How are you
testing when you get those unacceptably low speeds?

Then i would suspect the router.
Can you connect the computer directly to the modem rather than going
through the router? How is the modem connected to the router (what
type of cable connects the router to the modem)?

Do you think that 'speedtest.net' is making up the numbers? If that's
what they can measure using a (nearly) local server, then your slower
performance may be due to something other than the network (e.g. servers
or clients).
My figures from speedtest.net were 7.8140 download and 1.516 upload.

Damn, that looks nice. I'm faithful to DSL and at my current place I'm
too far away from the CO so my throughput dropped from 5 to 1.5 Mbps
with my last move.
For the USA the speed tests at dslreports.com have worked pretty well
for me.
