Post subject: Broken: image linking (Word 2004)
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>office>word (more info?)

Hi all,

I am using Word 2004 and have linked images into the document. Now if
I change the image file link by revealing the field codes and then
using a different (though valid) link, Word tool box says that it
cannot find the link no matter if I go to Edit/Links/Update Now, or
even Edit/Links/Change Source and change the source to the new image.
This link is dead. The only way to fix it is to delete it and replace
it. I can't afford to do that in all my documents when I am simply
changing the link using a macro for lots of images.

Here is the really interesting part. I copied my old Word X app back
onto my computer (careful not to disturb Word 2004) just to check out
this problem and Word X finds the links perfectly no matter what I do.
However, even if I save my document in Word X after editing the link
fields, Word 2004 still cannot find the links. Any help? or do I just
have to downgrade.

Thanks all,

Kraig

I've had similar (though not identical) problems.

There is no need to downgrade, though; just keep Word X on hand. I still
have to revert to Word X, for example, in order to built
table-of-contents fields (Word 2004 crashes when I try it). But most of
the time I use Word 2004. There is no problem going back and forth like
this, and the two can coexist perfectly well on the same machine. m.

Hi Kraig,

I don't have an answer for you but I'll ask about this and post back if/when
I get anything.

Thanks Matt and Beth, both. I appreciate your replies and help.

Matt, I have found that they do coexist fine, but why would I want two
applications just in order to do one or two things that should not have
been broken in the first place? Why does the upgrade not work as well
as the downgrade?

Oh, well, any help in fixing this would be appreciated.

Hi Kraig,

MS came back to me with the following.

-----------------------------------------------------
I am unable to repro this bug in Office 11, here are the steps I took
please let me know if I have missed out on a step:

1 Launch Word
2 Go to Insert | Picture | From File, selected a jpg from the desktop
and check the Link to Picture checkbox in the Insert Picture dialog and
unchecked the Save with Document checkbox
3 After inserting the picture in the document, I went to Word |
Preferences |View and checked the "Field codes" check box to display the
field code and then clicked on the OK button
4 I then changed the file name to another jpg which was on my desktop
5 To update the link I went to Edit | Links, unchecked the "Save picture
in document" checkbox, clicked on the "Update Now" button and then the
"OK" button in the "Links" dialog
6 Then went to the word preference dialog to uncheck the field codes
checkbox

The image was the second image that the link points to; here are some
questions for you:

1 What were the locations of the image files were they in different
folders or volumes?
2 What was the file format of the images?

Thanks for pursuing this Beth.

The MS response has followed the same steps that I did to get the
problem. In response to their two questions:

1) The images were placed in folders on the same volume. I have tried
images in the same folder, and images in a completely different
location. Neither worked.

2) The file format that I have used has only been jpeg. These are jpeg
photos directly from cameras of different manufacturer and retouched
images saved as jpeg from Adobe Photoshop.

I am afraid that that information will not hep too much. But I do
thank you for trying. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks again,

Kraig

Oh, I just though of how there is a little difference between what I am
doing and what was done by MS.

1) The document I inserted the picture in already existed.

2) The original link in the field was relative to the location of the
file (i.e. the link did not go back to the root of the hard drive but
looked like { INCLUDEPICTURE "::Photos:j0149014.jpg" \* MERGEFORMAT \d
} where the file was in a folder parallel to the folder containing the
images.)

3) The changed link in the field was also written relative to the
location of the word document.

Maybe that will help to reproduce the bug?

Thanks again,

Kraig

Hi Kraig,

I've passed on both of your posts and will relay any response I get. Thanks
for the followup.

Hi Kraig,

From Microsoft:

"Please thank the customer for providing more information. I could repro
this bug and it has been filed."

So, thanks very much, Kraig. Hopefully, now that the bug is identified, it
will be fixed before long.
