Is there any way to tell the computer that you want to make a unit
obsolete in Civ3? When I'm building tanks, I don't want the game to be
offering me swordsmen.

And I did this once by accident, and now can't figure out how I did it--
how do you remove city improvements?

I'm not sure. I know you can tell the City governors to focus on
building offensive or on defensive units, or to never build one or the
other, but I haven't encountered a menu specifically about removing some
specific units from the list of possible builds.

I believe it's clicking, or possibly control-clicking, on the
appropriate improvement in the lower left corner of the city screen, but
I'm not sure. Usually I don't want to sell things off, so I haven't had
to do it often.

Well, I just finished a game where I was one turn away from heading off
to Alpha Centauri and the game was trying to have me build swordsmen!
