In order to assign a color profile (provided by the printer manufacturer) you
first have to register the device (printer).

I looked through ColorSync's Help file, but it is unhelpful, at best, on this
subject.

How do I register the printer then assign a profile?

Thanks!

what application are you using? have you tried just copying the
profile to the following folder?
/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/

I have done that. But there's more to it than simply adding profiles to the
Profiles folder. You have to assign a particular profile to a device
(printer, scanner, display, etc.), I presume.

When I run ColorSync utility, how do I assign a profile to the printer?

I expand (click on the triangle next to) "Printers" and there's no printer
there. How do I assign my printer to the devices so I can assign a profile?

Could you be more specific (in how this is done)?

depends on the software.

for example, in photoshop cs3, on the right side of the print dialogue,
there is an area where you can choose the printer profile (from a
pop-up menu containing all installed profiles), and then decide whether
photoshop does the conversion to that profile, or if it is sent to the
printer as-is with the printer doing the conversion, or no conversion
at all. there is also a choice of rendering intents for the
conversion.

in other software, the choices will be similar, if they exist at all.
not all software is colour managed.

Preview.

Doesn't a printer need to be "registered" under ColorSync? (Else, what is the
purpose of the Devices panel in ColorSync utility?)
