depends on the software.
for example, in photoshop cs3, on the right side of the print dialogue,
there is an area where you can choose the printer profile (from a
pop-up menu containing all installed profiles), and then decide whether
photoshop does the conversion to that profile, or if it is sent to the
printer as-is with the printer doing the conversion, or no conversion
at all. there is also a choice of rendering intents for the
conversion.
in other software, the choices will be similar, if they exist at all.
not all software is colour managed.
