I am a fairly new MAC user and love it. We need to buy a new pc for my
husband and I want to get him a MAC but some of his business requires
receiving office 2007 windows xlsx attachments for mailing labels
that he needs to be able to use mail merge in the 2004 mac office
program. Will they work together? I would download the trial 2004 for
mac but my IMAC recognizes it as an expired trial and I can't test it
out before buying the new MAC.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks.

There is a converter for Office 2007 files, but it's still beta.
It *should* work providing they don't use WIndows-only technologies.
If it's a simple list for mail-merge, it should be fine,

Since Office 2007 can export in a xls format, they should really be
sending these files in this format to avoid any trouble. Do you know
whether they use Office 2007 specific features?

You probably already tried the trial version on this computer at some
point.

Here's a little triviality that you might as well know, since you'll be
enjoying your new Mac for a long time, and talking about it:

"Mac" = abbreviation for "Macintosh", a variety of apple and species of
computer.

Hence "iMac" and "MacBook".

"MAC" = "Media Access Control", a component of an arcane technology that I
understand not in the slightest...

(I mention this because many people switching from Windows seem unaware of
the origin of the name, hence are confused about the upper/lower case.)

Cheers,

CH

{Giggle} All Macs have one or more MACs :-)

It is a long hexadecimal number that uniquely identifies a communications
device to a network. It's similar to an IP address, but much longer.

For example, your network card and modem will both have a MAC. Everything
that connects to a network has one, although some of the cheaper
manufacturers do not bother to ensure that they are, in fact, unique in the
whole world, which they are supposed to be.

It enables a very high level of network security if you enable MAC control
on a wireless base station. When you do, only the specific devices you
nominate will be allowed to connect. AirPort cards we do not recognise as
being "family" will be rejected, regardless of whether they have the correct
password or not.

One bothers to set it only if the pimply youth next door persistently jumps
aboard your home wireless network to download porno or torrents. Pimply
youths can crack most wireless security, but not the MAC access (because if
you can not connect, you cannot see which MAC it's looking for...)

But it's a pain when YOUR friends arrive over for a party, and THEY can't
connect, and YOU can't remember why :-)

Cheers

This is a wonderful place. One only has to say "an arcane technology that I
understand not in the slightest" and m'learned colleague McGhie, or some
other polymath par excellence, will explain.

Now all I have to do is remember it all, for the next dinner party...

Neither MacOffice nor WinOffice are available as a download (except if
you're a subscriber to MSDN).

You can find info on MacOffice2004 (and the upgrade to MacOffice2008
when released in January) at MacTopia:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/

You can also run Office 2007 in Windows via Apple's Bootcamp or
Parallels (a third-party app).

This discussion group isn't run by Microsoft employees, so no-one can tell
you how much Word will cost. Check out a retailer in whatever country you
live in, or on the web. It isn't available via download.

Although the electronic file structure of the three main Office applications
(not Entourage) is identical between the PC and Mac, there are many
differences between the two versions at the detailed level -- often a
consequence of features of the Windows and Mac interfaces. You will
therefore need to buy the Mac edition of Office.

If you live in North America there are a couple of special deals at present
whereby you can buy Office 2004 and upgrade to 2008 for almost nothing: see
www.mactopia.com, Microsoft's site for Mac owners.

* SUGGESTION -- KEEP REVISITING AFTER YOU POST: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is provided; sometimes you'll be asked for further information. Good tips
about getting the best out of posting are at
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/AccessNewsgroups.html and
http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari you may see a
blank page and have to hit the circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current

Arghhh!! Enough!

Windows users actually have the same problem with earlier versions of Microsoft Office. A patch works nicely for them on PC's running Windows.

The patch for the Mac versions of Office, however, are not so helpful.

I suggest that you go back to the Windows source and simply ask for them to send the file in a older format (.xls or .doc) rather than the newer default file type.

An additional question.... I'm a new Mac user... since there is much difficulty with compatibility between MS Office 2004 and MS Office 2007 (w/ Mac) would it be better to purchase to MS Office 2004 and not 2007?

Hi Lorraine:

For advanced users, "Yes".

Office 2004 has a lot more of the functions used by advanced users than
Office 2008.

For users who can live without advanced functions, then it's probably better
to buy Office 2008 -- it's simpler to use, for undemanding users.

It helps to understand where the compatibility difficulties lie:

1) There are Windows and Mac users who have not yet installed the free
converter for the new file formats. These people will continue to be unable
to open the new file formats until they update their systems.

But this is not the Mac user's problem. The tools are there, they are
no-charge, they can download them in a minute or two.

You cannot make people use the correct tools. Nor can you stop them
complaining about the difficulties they get when they don't. People just
love to play the helpless victim :-)

But these people are currently pumping out a lot of text all over the
internet. In most cases, you will find that such people have either never
used the product at all, or have never learned to use it properly. Of
course, they won't tell you that!

Of course, you should form your own opinion about the appropriate action for
yourself.

2) There are currently a large number of bugs in Office 2008. Many of
these will be resolved by the Service Pack that is due out tomorrow. The
rest will be fixed over time: we can expect at least one more major service
pack.

3) Mac Office 2008 is a substantial cut-down of Office 2007. Microsoft has
left out about half the functionality.

So Office 2008 is not able to create or display or work with many of the
things that Office 2007 can.

Non-professional users do not use these functions, on either a PC or a Mac.
Research abounds that proves conclusively that 80 per cent of users use only
ten per cent of the software's functions. Such users will never need or
notice the missing functions.

However, the other 20 per cent of us DO stretch Office applications to their
full capability. We frequently use things such as Macros, Automation,
Graphics Editing, the Analysis Toolpack, and a full range of citation
standards.

Such users are better advised to sit this release out. Office 2008 has
limited functionality. Office 2004 is still a supported product.
Professional users and power users can afford to wait for the next version,
and in most cases, they should.

There, that's a fairly expansive answer. I hope it gives you what you need
to form your own opinion.

Cheers
