Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>printing (more info?)

I give up. I've read many of the messages posted here, and on HP's
site, and throughout the web. But I can't figure it out.

I am trying to hookup my old workhorse, a HP LaserJet 4MV, to my new
iMac G5 with OS 10.4 installed. The only common style port on both
machines is ethernet. I tried a direct connect from the 4MV ethernet
port (10baseT) to the iMac ethernet port using an ethernet crossover
cable. Using the printer setup utility on the Mac I am able to find
the printer driver and set it up. I've tired using both IPP Printing
and JetDirect - Socket as protocols. I've manually set an IP address
for the 4MV via its control panel. Apple talk is turned on. But ....
when I continually get a message "Unable to connect to printer
(retrying in __ seconds): Operation timed out."

I've tried changing IP addresses; tried both protocols. Nothing works.
What am I missing here?

I've also purchased a Belkin parallel to USB printer adapter (found in
the MAC sdection of CompUSA) only to get it home to more carefully read
the box. It is only Windows compatible. Aggghhhh!

But, what I'd really like to know is how to make the direct ethernet to
ethernet connection work. One of the docs found on the HP website
suggests that perhaps a crossever direct connection may not work in all
instances????

Suggestions anyone? Thanks!

I think my internal printer server card is bad (at least the ethernet
connector/chip - the rest works). Of course, for my old printer, HP no
longer sells the card. They recommend a replacement part, which omits,
unfortunately, the Apple Talk connection. And it costs only $473.
:-)

However, I found a replacement for the old card on eBay for $9.99 and
will give that a try.
