My new Nokia 6610 came as part of a set tha included a cable to connect
to a USB port. At home I have a mac powerbook. My question is, what are
the kind of things people do with a phone-mac hook up? The only thing I
can think of is saving my contact info, and maybe downloading it to my
next phone. Does that require any special software?

internet access (slower than 56 k in most situations)
syncing phone numbers and address books
Sending SMS messages and IMs to another cell phone user via the computer
upload download pictures (camera phones and graphics) themes, and ringtones

More fun with bluetooth, as the cable isn't necessary.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Well, you really can't do the pictures and ringtones that way, with a standard
sync can you? Address Book and iCal are pretty much what iSync pays attention
to., and little else.

Via bluetooth, a phones file system for the tones and pictures is pretty much
discoverable via Bluetooth File exchange, which is hidden deep enough in the
Utilities folders that not everyone actually knows the helper app is there
(although it will pop up if I send a picture or such via bluetooth to my Mac).
I am not entirely sure if the typical USB connection allows access to the
pictures or ringtones on a phone, but if so, it is probably fairly
"finder-like" as Bluetooth File Exchange is.

Some particular phones will have apps supplied by the phone manufacturer
available on their site, that may allow movement or creation of images and
ringtones, but you might have to dig up a third party shareware app.

Also, you may want to search for Nokia/mac specific modem scripts.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have the 6310i which has built in BlueTooth. There is a shareware
called Phone Manager which will transfer data between the Nokia and
Address Book.

I've used the BlueTooth / GSM combination to go online both in the US
and overseas.
