I was trying to copy them on to a backup drive but then it said the
permissions didn't allow some of them to be copied. Is there a way
around that? Or do those applications require installation to work
properly?

Then I'm trying to empty the trash but its saying some files are
"locked". I clicked "continue" about 50 times and then gave up. Am I
doing something wrong? I repaired permissions a couple of hours ago.

And is there any way that by using an external USB2 hard drive, this
might introduce any problems?

Use a bacup application. If you have a .Mac subsription, use Apple's
Backup.app. If not, get something like "SuperDuper!". SD! will make a
complete, bootable backup of your drive if you like, and do smart
updates (i.e., synchronising changes onlyl) once you've made the initial
base copy.

The definition of madness, according to Einstein, is to keep doing,
again and again and again, that which does not work... ;-)

Locked files either have to be unlocked, or you have to override the
lock.

You unlock individual files by selecting them, do Get Info (Cmd-I) and
clearing the "Locked" checkbox.

You override the lock for files in he Trash by holding down Alt (aka
Option) while selecting "Empty Trah" in the Finder's application menu
(i.e., the one named "Finder").

Not in this regard, no. (And don't interpret that to mean that in every
other regard it will - just to say that there may conceivably be
circumstances, etc.)

Nit: USB2 is bootable on all Intel Macs. It has recently become bootable
(for OS X) on some PPC Macs.

Yes, when the programmers at Apple installed some app's, for whatever
reason they decided to make them hard to copy.

They might have valid reasons for doing so, I dunno.

> Is there a way around that?

Yes indeed, but it is difficult for a newbie to learn. Almost all
general Mac books detail how to do it.

> Or do those applications require (re)installation
> to work properly?

No, at least none of the app's I use required re-installation, they just
merely require a good backup scheme for the entire boot partition.

For example, I recently zapped an application that cost $900, along with
several other app's that were being used with that expensive app'.

No problem, just grabbed my handy dandy backup, restored my entire boot
partition, and was back in business in 5 minutes.

Most Mac users do not bother backing up individual applications, instead
they back up the entire boot partition, using some 3rd-party backup
program to do it.

....some program like "SuperDuper!" or "Carbon Copy Cloner", or
possibly "Retrospect".

I can't offer any recommendations, because I have never used any of
those three backup programs.

"SuperDuper!" seems to be the favorite, near as I can tell.

Keep in mind that whatever backup scheme you pick has to be capable of
restoring your boot partition to its former "bootable" condition.

The important thing is to buy a backup program you like, and learn how
to apply it.

That will save you the lengthy hassle of needing to re-install
everything from scratch, which could take hours.

..Mac's Backup does not make a bootable copy though. If you want a free
option, (or at least donationware), there's also Carbon Copy Cloner.
This can also make a bootable copy, and is now in a Beta version 3,
which does do scheduled syncronising.

Indeed, although if you can use Firewire instead, you will most likely
see better data transfer rates. It's also less reliable as a bootable
backup too. USB2 has only just become bootable on the latest Intel Macs.

Generate a clone with SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. They'll copy
everything over, permissions and all. I use SuperDuper! to do exactly that;
my autobackup runs each night at 00:30.

The 'locked' problem is easily solved. Do a get info on the file(s) in
question and unlock them. Repairing permissions will do nothing about this.

You may have problems booting from a USB drive, unless you're booting an
Intel Mac. Even then, FireWire is preferred.

And something I have just discovered through my "Missing Manual" book is that
if you _hold_ the mouse down when you click on the Trash, then select Empty
Trash from the subsequent pop-up menu, it will empty without any further ado
- locked files and all.

No, it's $27.95 shareware. SilverKeeper, from LaCie, _is_ free and
makes bootable whole volume backups.

yes SuperDuper is shareware if you want to use its incremental
backup features.

But if you just want to make a full bootable clone, that is free.

Nope. Easy. The only problem with apps is you very often want their
support files, too. But that problem is there no matter what - I think
Migration Assistant is maybe the only one that does that completely
transparently.

Set SD! to

Ignore *
Ignore .*
Copy /Applications/*
Copy /Library/Applications Support/*

and add any necessary directories you mayt want apart from that.

(I don't know if the ordering here is significant - on my Mac it doesn't
seem to be, but I have an exactly parallel script for media files that
works just fine.)

Oh! I'd never noticed that part before. Thanks for the clarification.
