Post subject: Correct Driver for Soundblaster SB Live on W2K?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetexplorer>ie4>outlookexpress, others (more info?)

I have received a used Gateway system I am fixing up for my neice.

It originally had Windows Millenium in it but that OS was damaged due
to viruses and worms. I have no recovery disks.

I have wiped the drive and installed a licensed version of Windows
2000 and it is working OK. I managed to install IE6 and SP4 for W2k
and all security updates through present.

I am having some problems with the sound system which is a Boston
Acoustics BA7500G. Thi sis a 3-speaker digital ssound system.

I am wondering what the correct driver would be for the sound card.

All I can determine is that it is a Soundblaster SB Live! type.

It operates as a regular sound card but has a switchable check box in
the Audio Properties panel to turn on digital sound. I have tried a
generic driver and it is working fair at present.

My problem is that the Boston Acoustics web site has no information.

When I went to the Creative web site for Soundblaster drivers it
offers several and there is no information anywhere on which is right.

I believe this was a standing Gateway config with the Boston Acoustics
sound system but so far no data.

Any suggestions for a better or proper driver?

You probably need to open up the computer and look at the audio card.
There is usually a model number printed on it. Drivers from the SB site
may or may not work. Sometimes, OEM cards require OEM drivers.

Did you check Gateway's site to see if they have Win2K drivers?

the gateway web site has a system checker . . . and they have downloads for
their PCs . . . you may have to use one of their drivers . . .
http://support.gateway.com/support/default.asp
Enter the serial number from the back of the PC and you're off.

by the way, I've found
http://members.driverguide.com/index.php

To be a fairly decent site . . . they even offer a free scan.

Didn' tseem to locate anything there (Gateway) of use.

I think the bundle may have had OEM drivers orifginally.

I had the chassis open to clean it and move the dial-up modem to a new
slot but didn't seem to locate anything useful on the sound card.

I was hoping someone with a similar config might have some suggestions.

I have since gotten the thing to produce sound with a driver from the
Creative/SoundBlaster site but I don't think its the right one. Some
stuff in a control panel is x'd out.

The Gateway site suggested 3 possible cards and 2 possible drivers.

I have downloaded and installed the driver for digital sound which
this system is.

Seems to be working OK so far.

Still seem to be missing some features though.

Thanks to all who helped.
