DVD not showing up on harddrive

Hey all. I need some help. I am new to burning DVDs. Despite having had this
Imac with a superdrive for about 2 years now. I have a dvd recorder for my
tv. I have a dvd that I recorded and finalized that I wish to capture a clip
from. It is a DVD-RW. I was told that these would work. I was concerned about
finding the right software to capture from a DVD. Turns out that I cant even
seem to get the DVD to mount. It doesnt even show up on my desktop. Now what
do I do?

Problem found. Disc initialized for VR mode. VR mode only works on certain
brand new players. (like only mine apparently) Initializing disc corrected
the mounting problem.

Now for my next question. What software can I use to capture a video clip
from the DVD? I wish to convert it to a format suitable for a website and
