I have an Epson 740 inkjet printer and it has the frustrating property
that it won't print if either the black or color cartridge is empty. I
assume Epson has done similar weird stuff with later multi-cartridge
printers. So my question is, can you buy some kind of "spoof" color
cartridge that will make the printer think it is full so you can print
B&W stuff when your color cartridge has gone dry? The bind I get into
is that the printer doesn't give a lot of warning, and a lot of the
time, I'd have to pay a premium price for a color cartridge (or don't
have the time to get one) when it goes dead. Ugly if I really need
something in B&W right now.

I've seen ads for chip resetters which reset the chips on the cartridges so
you can stick them to the side of refilled/third party carts, and this might
be what you need. Google will be your friend.

Just take the color cart out & put it back in. That works with mine.
To replace the color cart you'll have to pull the power when the heads are
in the changing bay since, if no cart appears empty, it won't let you
change them.
