My new LaCie 40 GB PocketDrive seems to operate just fine on my Mac
IBook right out of the box, under OS 9.2, with only the FireWire cable
connected and no AC adaptor needed. The setup instructins in the
manual, however, say the AC adaptor should be connected.

It's really neat to have only a single cable (though a more flexible
version of the cable would be nice). Any reasons NOT to operate the
PocketDrive in this way? I don't have anything else daisy-chained on
the FireWire port, and don't expect to.

Thanks for any info.

I just received a 60 GB Pocketdrive and under OS 10.2.8 on my iBook it
too works fine without the adapter - I believe I checked at the LaCie
website and found a manual online there that mentioned that it could be
used without the AC adapter if no other firewire devices are
daisy-chained to the port.

I have a 20 GB PocketDrive I got a couple of years ago. I love this
little jewel. It has FireWire and USB (which appears to be USB 2.0)
and I have used it with both connections.

My materials said that the drive is bus-powered with a 6-pin FW
connection from the computer itself. It said the AC adapter is
necessary if using the USB connection, running through a CardBus FW
card on a laptop, or if the PC connection is a 4-pin FW port since a
6-pin port is required to provide AC power.

While running this PocketDrive in FW-powered mode on my iBook, I have
also connected an MCE Lucid FW-powered CD burner and both have worked
flawlessly.

I cannot remember for certain, but I think I have plugged this
PocketDrive into a powered FW device (a Que hard drive and a Que CD
burner) and it has powered up without needing the AC adapter.

Thanks. LaCie support also says no AC adaptor needed with direct FW
connection to Mac. Unless I missed something, however, the manual that
came with my PocketDrive seemed to say the AC adaptor should be used
with all forms of FW or USB connection
