Post subject: New File Format .docx & Windows Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>office>word (more info?)

I notice that under Word 2008 the default file format is now .docx, not
..doc.
Can Windows users open the files seamlessly, or is it better tochange
the Prefs to Save As .doc?

The new .docx format is exact same format as office2007 for PC.

Depends :-)
If the recipient is using Word 2007, no problem,
If the recipient is using Word 2000-2003 & has the necessary converter pack
installed, no problem,
If the recipient has prior to 2007 *without* the converters, problem.

Thanks... I'll stick with .docx until someone says they can't open
something I send them.

I use word 2002 and downloaded the converter pack and still can not open docx
document.

Hi Ken -
If you use 2002 you must be on a Windows OS so we probably won't have the
answer for you - at least not as readily as one of the PC Word groups. Have
a look here for the news groups that cater to the Windows versions of
Office:
