I have an external 180mb Western hard drive on my Dual 1.8 G5.

When I use FIND to search for files I know are on the external drive,
it won't find them and I don't think it is even looking on the
external for them. I add the drive to the items to search, but it
still won't search it. Then when I look go back to the items list of
devices to search the external drive is no longer checked.

Any ideas?

I use the Finders find. What is the Terminal find? I have a second
internal drive that the Finder has no problem with.

When I double-click the icon for my external volume to open a window,
then chose Find under the File Menu, the window turns into a search form
with that volume selected as the target. Does it for you?

If the volume does not appear as a choice, maybe it's because Spotlight
has been told not to search it (by Privacy in the Preferences or by a
Terminal command.)

If the volume is listed but files in the volume aren't found, maybe the
Spotlight index for that volume needs rebuilding.

Forget the command line. It is not necessary to know anything about the
command line to use the Mac OS.

Look at the "Spotlight" pane in System Preferences. Click the Privacy
tab and make sure that your external drive is not listed under the
"Prevent..." heading.

If your drive is listed, highlight it with a mouse click and then click
the minus sign at the bottom of the list. Quit System Preferences.

If your drive is _not_ listed, drag the icon of your external drive to
the Privacy list. Click "Show All" to exit the Spotlight pane. Then
return to the Spotlight pane / Privacy tab. Highlight the drive that
you just added and remove it by clicking the minus sign at the bottom
of the list to remove it again. You may quit System Preferences. This
procedure _should_ cause Spotlight to index your external drive--it
worked for me when I had the problem that you are experiencing.

How do you rebuild the Spotlight index?

Open System Preferences and select Spotlight.

Search Results will be highlighted, select Privacy instead.

Add the Hard Drive to the Privacy list, then remove it from the list.

During the rebuilding process the Spotlight icon on the menu bar will
have a dot inside it's icon. A nice visual to remind us that the
rebuilding process is taking place.
