I'm using cdparanoia to rip some troublesome audio CDs on my Mac Mini,
but Finder insists on mounting every disk I insert, which prevents
cdparanoia from accessing the drive.

All of my CD and DVD system preferences are set to "ignore". But how
can I make Finder really ignore the CD when I insert it? Or is there a
way for Finder to unmount the volume without physically ejecting the
disk? I've had to resort to carefully timing the start of cdparanoia
so it grabs the device before Finder can mount the CD.

On a related note, how do I eject USB storage devices so that they
don't immediately get remounted again before I manage to unplug them?

This is on Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger).

I have no problems *unmounting* the disk, I simply want Finder to stop
*mounting* it (i.e. to respect the "ignore" setting). Is there no
automounter I can turn off...

Thanks, I'll have a look at those.

Maybe I am missing something, but why not just leave the disk mounted or
simply not plug it in when you don't want to use it?

I want to read the CD with cdparanoia.

Finder mounts a CD whenever one is inserted into the drive, so it
shows up as a folder on the desktop.

But cdparanoia wants exclusive access to the drive in order to read
the CD (it bypasses the operating system's VFS layer, or something
along those lines), and the fact that Finder has already mounted the
CD prevents this.

The tools mentioned earlier are alternative frontends to the same
paranoia library, and if they can handle the mounting issue then I'll
probably be happy using one of them.

Since it's a Mac port of the software, it should already address this,
either in the code or the documentation. Otherwise it would,
obviously, be utterly useless. I would contact the people responsible
for the software and see what they suggest.

You _might_ try renaming /System/Library/Extensions/cddafs.kext to
something not ending in .kext (if I'm guessing right, the Mac won't
recognize an audio CD as having a file system without this kernel
extension). This is something of a SWAG, so caveat lector.

I had a look at Max last night and it seems to do the job, thanks for the tip.
