The latter, I think. Flight simming was fun six or seven years ago, and okay
five years ago. Then two things happened. One was that the supply of Mac
sims basically dried up except for Falcon, which was more than I wanted to
take on.
Last year I bought a new joystick to go with my USB Mac, and didn't even
bother to send it back when it turned out not to work. I guess I'm just not
interested in anything out there. Could I get interested again? Depends. I
know my hand/eye coordination ain't what it used to be. More to the point, I
don't have the situational awareness I once did. So, to work for me a sim
can't be too challenging. On the other hand, if it's just a shallow lash up
that doesn't even try to be authentic, I'm not even going to look at it. I
guess I present a pretty narrow marketing target and I'm not really
expecting to have anything fall in my lap.
I still like planes though.

Doldrums.
That said, I've been having a bit of fun playing WWII online recently -
they've just added the Havoc, which is a most useful beast when
defending against one of the vessels in the suspiciously numerous
kriegsmarine.

Sorta. Running OS X day to day, and have an iMate/CH F16 ADB stick. So
if I want to sim I have to boot into 9. slightly tedious.

Know that you mean...I do the same even with my USB gear. Falcon will
run under Classic, but I lose the Open GL graphics (due to my stock
graphics card, I think). Haven't tried Hornet yet.

What's the superlative of "slack"?
SWMBO has returned and my ATOCBG (allowed time on computer before
grumbling) is very low, except during hours 0400-0700 - but that's when
I get work done. wah.
Work these days is attempting to restore files from two FW HDs that went
south, ~80GB on one and ~100GB on other. Requires lots of attention from
one POS application called Data Rescue X by Prosoft. argh. :-(

Bvmmer. I had an HD pack vp a few years back. The adventvre of getting my
compvter to rvn again is a trve odyssey. Not at all one that I wovld seek to
repeat.

I've heard of that app - how's it working for you?
I seem to suffer from dissapering files/folders from time to time under
OS X - particularly in my Pictures folder - even though the drive seems
to be just fine. Got a lot of shots I'd like to get back, if it's
possible...

About 30,000 PSI of suck.
In brief, it's awful. But it's the only thing that will give me a chance
of recovering some of my files.
I've posted a complaint list to another forum. I'll find the post and
send it up here.

I paid about US$110 for it, and while it may eventually be worth it, it
sure isn't now. That day I also dropped US$900 for a new tape drive to
do *real* backups again. I'm no longer going to rely on the theory of
backing up to large external hard drives.
And FWIW, the tape drive (AIT2, a slightly obsolete format) came with
Retrospect 5.1 Workgroup for Macintosh, *and* with Retrospect 6.5
Multiserver. These two pieces of software by themselves cost more than
the tape drive. So I figure I got a good deal. (Though I still had to
inflict a massive wound in my budget.)

I have an audio DAT deck (TASCAM DA-30) - I've often wondered about
using that for back-ups, as it has an interface on it. Know of anyone
that does so?

Did anyone ever get around to recording commercial music tapes for those?
Seems to be another vanished technology, sort of like Betamax.

There was talk of this long ago in the days of SCSI and DAT backups, but
it was eventually dropped. I don't know of anybody who is doing it.
Lately there has also been talk of people who can export data to their
DVcam (deck), but I didn't follow the details and don't remember how
it's said to be done.

At the consumer level it was killed by the restrictive DRM embedded by
the music cartel. At the pro level, DAT is still very much alive and a
standard. (Rufus' Tascam is the standard manufacturer in fact.)
