Post subject: Formatting Video Made from Quicktime Video Screen Captures, for YouTube?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>system (more info?)

I have not yet found a way to upload video made from Quicktime video
screen captures (e.g. to demonstrate software) to YouTube, without
unacceptable smearing and blurriness resulting from the YouTube
resampling that is done when they convert the video to Flash.

My source video is 480 x 272 (iMovie '08 "Export Mobile" default
setting). I'm trying to produce a file that will look good on YouTube,
and so far I've tried a variety of 4:3 sizes, including 425 x 318 (per
advice found at
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/youtube_compressor_gary.html) and
the YouTube-recommended 320 x 240. So far, the results have all been
smeared and blurry.

Some sites state that if you transfer your video to Flash Video format
prior to uploading it to YouTube, using certain settings, YouTube will
not resample your video, but I have not yet found that to be the case.

Is there a way to format a video made from Quicktime video screen
captures for YouTube, that can result in acceptable image quality?

I guess the main question is what are you trying to send them, .mov files?

The only thing I find that works well between Quicktime and YouTube is using
the Divx codec. Suppose you have to upgrade to QT Pro and there is some
memory of the divx being a donation also, but is worth it.

Whatever the format is of the original, it's just exported out of QT using
divx, where you can then set the size, preferably to 640x480 or 320x240
which is native to YouTube. Rename the .divx file to .avi and send that.

You are correct about the .flv format, even using the guidelines of 320x240
with mono audio at the 32k audio sampling rate (or whatever it is), they
will still chew on it and spit out something else.

Just by trial and error on my part, the QT Pro, divx codec, using either
640x480 or 320x240, 15fps or 30fps and sending the file with the extention
..avi seems to make YouTube happy, both with the speed of the conversion and
output quality.
