And when you are done, you get to keep the backup disk for
something else. Like, for example, having a back up.

I think Apple knows more about 'real life' usage of Mac OS X than you.
And here's what Apple says about it:
"Do I need to optimize?
You probably won't need to optimize at all if you use Mac OS X. "

Not necessary:
Apple says:
"Do I need to optimize?
You probably won't need to optimize at all if you use Mac OS X. "

I guess you're not familiar with our old friend, Erik. His 'real life'
Macintosh experiences are frequently quite different than everyone
else's.

The only active defragmenting that OS X does is "hot file adaptive
clustering" on the startup volume. Other volumes on OS X systems may
become more fragmented over time. To defragment them in place, you'll
have to use third-party software.
Whether there's "any reason" to do so depends on the situation.
Defragmenting may be necessary before doing a live disk repartition, and
it may speed up the opening of very large files. Otherwise, it's
generally not worth the cost of the software or the added wear and tear
on the drive. >> Stay informed about: Freeware defrag Software |

I don't think there's any good reason to defrag, but I doubt that doing
it occasionally is going to cause one's drive to die prematurely.

Hey, this is all about getting accurate information to those who need
it. What do want us to do, ignore your posts and let naive readers
discover the hard way that what you say happens to you is often
different than what happens to everyone else?
