Well I _think_ I have my Epson 740 finally running again under Panther.
It would have been a lot easier had Apple mentioned somewhere in the
Install instructions that the Epson drivers were in the custom install
only. And I can only hope there is some darn good reason for the
protracted printer set-up procedures, but I have yet to discover it.
That the setup procedures are very UN-intuitive, clunky and inexplicable
is another matter that I hope Apple will correct in future
implementations of X.
For instance, I have yet to divine the advantage of having an image of
my sole printer on the desktop, though perhaps this is advantageous in a
multi-user, multi-printer configuration. Yet, I am forced to add
clutter to my desktop because, unlike printing in OS 9 where the
print-monitor would automatically start so you could manage the queue or
stop printing jobs from the menu bar if you wanted, now one must go
through a series of FOUR steps* just to stop a print job once it has
started--- that is unless you install a "desktop printer" that you can
double-click on to access the queue. I do not call this progress. And
I am only guessing here but I suppose that the disappearance of the
*automatic* Epson Print-Monitor was necessary to make all printers act
in the same way under Panther. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
I would really like to know why I am being denied this fundamental
convenience. Surely there is some way to add this most basic
functionality back into Panther.
*The four steps, according to the Print Help Viewer:
1. Open System Preferences and click Print & Fax.
2. Click Printing, and then click the Set Up Printers button.
3. Double-click the printer in the Printer List to see the
printer's Jobs window.
4. Click Stop Jobs or Start Jobs to stop or start all print jobs
in the queue.

The purpose of a desktop printer is so you can drop a document on the
desktop printer and have it printed. Otherwise you have to open the
document in its application and print from the application.
As for managing or stopping a print job without a desktop printer, it is
only one step more than with the DT printer. Click on the printer setup
utility in the Dock (it will be there if there's a print job running)
and double click on the name of the printer in the Printer list. you
will get the same dialog you get by double clicking on the DT printer.

Here's another short cut; click on the DT printer and then type
command-R to reveal the printer file that the DT printer is an alias of.
Then drag that printer to the dock. You can then delete the DT printer
from the desktop.

Thank you! I am so unaccustomed to the dock (i keep mine hidden too
because I always have full pages of text on my screen) that it did not
occur to me to look there. You would think that the instructions might
have told me that though. Mine is even easier. Both the printer
utility and the Epson print utility show up in the dock. So I can just
click on the Epson utility and then "stop job". >> Stay informed about: Frustrations with Printing Under Panther |

Heya,
You responded to my question in another thread about this, that they're
on the 3rd Panther CD. I'm curious, if one has already upgraded to
Panther, does one have to run the installer from the first Install CD,
then go into the custom install to get these drivers, or can one start
with this third CD? If the latter, is there an installer there, or do I
have to copy files manually?
Much thanks--I'm going to upgrade my home computer from .2 to .3 one of
these days, but it's good to have all these sorts of ducks lined up
first :)

It was perfectly clear to me from the description in the installer
itself.

What procedure? Selecting it from a menu? That's all I did.

Likewise - so I didn't bother making one.

The "Stylus Color 740" app is accessible from the Dock while printing
is in progress. Just open it and stop the job. >> Stay informed about: Frustrations with Printing Under Panther |

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here, but when I print in Panther,
a printer icon for my selected printer appears in the Dock (just like
the Print Monitor for 9). I click the printer icon and it displays my
printer queue and I can manage it as I like. I have not installed a
Desktop Printer (at least, I'm not aware of having installed one, nor
do I see such a beast on my desktop).
Printers recognized by my iMac are Epson Photo 780 (direct), NEC 4200N
(networked), and Epson 777 (shared from another Mac).

Yes.... it would have been nice if the instructions had pointed that
out. The Help Viewer is sometimes less than helpful. I am new to X and
unaccustomed to the dock which I keep hidden to conserve screen space.
Thanks :)

The third CD is not a boot disk. Just put it in the drive and you open
the "package" folder. Each item there has its own installer; just click
on the one(s) you want. You do not need to run the custom installer on
disk one. Good luck :) >> Stay informed about: Frustrations with Printing Under Panther |

Well, the instructions do say that every running application (except
those without a user interface) are in the dock.

But if a program is running in the background, how do you know it is
running unless you look in the Dock? So, therefore, unless you already
know, you would not even look in the Dock. I am accustomed to a
"PrintMonitor" running from the menu bar while I am printing. That is
what I as looking for and missing. I had no way of knowing that a
PrinterSetup Utility or that EpsonPrinterUtility, which previously was
only for running diagnostics, would inexplicably supplant the
PrintMonitor function or that I should somehow _guess_ I should look for
them in my hidden dock which I don't use much anyway. There were NO
instructions or explanations that explained the change. I am new to OS
X and have no way of intuiting such things except from experience which
I obviously lack. :) >> Stay informed about: Frustrations with Printing Under Panther |
