I have recently bought a Garmin GPSMAP 276c.
I am considering buying virtual pc to allow me to use the cartography
software.
Should it work?
I am using a G4 733 power pc with 1g of ram and OS 10.3.8

Most people seem to be unable to get Garmin devices to work with
Virtual PC. I never did get the Garmin USB card reader to work, but my
Pharos GPS receiver works just fine in VPC.

According to the Missing Sync manual VPC is supposed to work with the
Garmin 3600 but it doesn't mention any other models.

I've recently purchased a Garmin Quest. The City Select software
installed fine, however I can't get VPC 7 to recognize my Quest
specifically as a USB device, only as an unknown USB device. The City
Select software doesn't see the Quest. Any luck out there loading a
Quest from VPC 7?

I don't own one, but I use a Tungston T and I recently purchased the
Missing Sync program. the manual mentions the Garmin 3600 and gives
instructions on setting it up.

Installing Maps on the Garmin iQue 3600 You can install maps either
directly to the Garmin iQue 3600 or to the expansion card. To begin the
installation process, you must begin with either a PC computer or
Virtual PC.

1. Using a Windows PC or Virtual PC, launch Palm Desktop for Windows.
2. From within the Windows Palm Desktop, choose Map Install and follow
the on-line instructions for selecting maps for installation.
3. So the program can determine how to format the map(s) for transfer,
choose either the internal storage on the Garmin iQue 3600 or the
expansion card as a destination for the maps. Depending on where you
choose to store the maps, the next step will vary.
4. If you choose to store the maps on the PC hard drive, once the maps
have been copied and transferred as .prc or .pdb files to the PC hard
drive, copy files from the PC hard drive location: C:\Program
Files\Palm\Username\Install to the Mac.

a. Set the files to install using the Install feature of The Missing
Sync for Palm OS.
b. Perform a sync operation to install the files onto the Garmin iQue
3600.

5. If planning to install to the Garmin expansion card, copy files from
the PC hard drive location: C:\Program
Files\Palm\Username\CardInst\Slot-SD to the Mac. Install the files onto
the expansion card in one of the following three ways.
a. Set the files to install using the Install feature of The Missing
Sync for Palm OS.
b. Perform a sync operation to install the files onto the Garmin iQue
3600.
c. Mount the card on the Mac desktop by opening The Missing Sync for
Garmin on the iQue 3600 and copy the files to the file /GARMIN/ on the
mounted expansion card.

Virtual PC is a disappointment. Very, very slow. And it's expensive.

For just a little more (maybe $100) you can buy a useful PC with
monitor, and use other PC applications as well as Garmin navigation
software.

Keep your good Mac and get a backup too.

It's the best way to go for this situation.

He isn't limited to Garmin on VPC.

AND OS X makes it very easy to network with the PC. You can use its hard
disk and printers over the network. I use a mix of Windows Apps running
under VPC6 on a Mac Powerbook (where I need portability) and a networked
"legacy" PC that manages to control an old HP laser printer. I connect
my Garmin GPS to the PC. I gave up trying to get it to work via VPC on
the Mac but have got Mac GPS Pro to talk to the GPS.
