Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>printing, others (more info?)

With a MacBook Pro and Leopard, I'm unable to use the HP printer utility
with my 4MV. It's been handy for troubleshooting and occasionally
changing a static IP address, although I can do that from the printer
control panel.

Is there a substitute for the printer utility? I experimented a few
weeks ago with using telnet to communicate with the printer. I forgot
I'd done that until the printer today happened to show me my name on its
panel instead of "ready," or whatever else I was looking for. It's still
working fine, though.

I don't know enough about the open-source alternatives, but Google in HP
and printer utility doesn't show me any. I still have an erratic Pismo I
can boot into OS9 to use the original utility, but I don't expect that
to be around nearly as long as the 4MV.

Am I missing something obvious?

What happens when you try to use it?

Sorry, I should have pointed out that it's an HP's Printer Utility is
OS8-9 application. It will run in Classic, I think, and let me change
settings on the printer. But the MacBook Pro won't run any classic app,
won't boot into OS9. I have a G4 iBook which will run Classic but won't
boot in OS9. And it won't run Classic after I update it to Leopard, as I
have the MBPro.

I put WinXP on the MBPro using Boot Camp, and I haven't checked out what
drivers/utilities are available for it.

But the question came from a desire for a convenient tool for the job
using my everyday machine, rather than whether I have any ability at all
to do the job using my old ought-to-be-retired Pismo or booting the
MBPro into Windows.

Actually, I just took a look at HP's web site, and they do apparently
have a Mac OS X version of the utility:

<http://preview.tinyurl.com/eqadp>

Have you tried installing that?

BTW, you *can* run the classic Mac OS and applications on a MacBook Pro.
I run them on mine. You just need to set up SheepShaver:

I would do that as a *last* resort, personally. ; )

Did you try looking on HP's web site? I believe there's a Mac OS X
version of this software that might be compatible with Leopard. The link
I found by doing a search there is

Ah - right you are. I hadn't actually run through the install.
