Hi all,
I'm trying to print from my iMac G3 with Panther 10.3.5 to HP DeskJet 710c
connected to the print server on my wireless D-link-router. Any suggestions?

The HP DeskJet 710c is not a network printer, but it works with my
Windows-computers (directly in XP and with a workaround in pre-XP).

I have downloaded and installed the ESP Ghost Script 7.0.7.
and the pnm2ppa file found on linuxprinting.org
The latter contains the print-driver for the HP DeskJet 710c which appears
in the printer list.
But how to configure?

In XP I have to identify the the printer port as follows:
Port name: IP_192.168.0.1
Description: Standard TCP/IP Port
Protocol: LPR
Queue name: lp
and to make sure that the "Enable advanced printing feaatures" is NOT
checked.

iMac G3
Mac OS X Panther 10.3.5

D-link 713p, wireless router with print server
The iMac is connected directly to the router through Airport.

Any help appreciated.
/Mats

Hi Mats,

LPR/LPD printing is usually a piece of cake. Launch
"/Applications/Utilities/Printer Setup Utility", select "Printers:Add
Printer", and set it to "IP Printing", "LPD/LPR", "192.168.0.1", "lp"
(from top to bottom), plus the printer model.

Or did I get your question wrong?

Thanks, Andre, for your answer.
No, you didn't get the question wrong, the problem is, see, it doesn't work.

Since the HP DeskJet 710C is not Mac compatible, and there is no OS X
drivers available from HP, I am looking for a workaround.

I have found a driver which will make the HP DeskJet 710C print from a Mac
(the file pnm2ppa I mentioned in my first text). But still no luck.

I have also tried the advanced option by option/alt click on Add printer in
the Printer setup utility, but maybe I am using the wrong syntax.

Any ideas?

/Mats

(Please don't top-post, it makes threads hard to read!)

Do you know

Hi again,
that's where I found the pnm2ppa file. However, still no luck. It just won't
print. What about the GhostScript, how to configure? And how to make it the
default print-driver (right now when I hit print I'll get the information
that it's using the HPIJS which is no good - then it will not work for
sure).

Please stop top-posting!!

What I meant is: The docs suggest to install the printer driver stuff
(esp. the PPD file; which seems to suggest to install foomatic as
well, but I'm not sure) with the printer attached to the USB port.
Provided you can print this way, edit /etc/cups/printers.conf (as
admin), and replace the <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="usb://" target="_blank">usb://</a> style URL with your
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="lpd://$IPaddress/lp" target="_blank">lpd://$IPaddress/lp</a> URL to trigger the print server. Restart printing
services or simply reboot and see what happens...

PS, the PPD file provides the GhostScript command: "gs -q -dNOPAUSE
-dPARANOIDSAFER -dBATCH -r60&& 0%A%Z -sOutputFile=- - | pnm2ppa%C%B
-i - -o -"

PPS: If you can't get it to work at all with CUPS, maybe "lpr-bash"
(from <http://freshmeat.net>) is easier to configure now that you
roughly know the gs command...

Hi,
Since I'm not a programmer, I have to rely on the GUI for guidance.
So, I don't know how to access /etc/cups/printers.conf
and
also I'm having the typical non-programmer difficulties in passing minor
obstacles such as the login-procedure in Mac OS X when trying to access
CUPS. What to fill in when evertyhing seems to be rejected. What is default?

Once again, thanks Andre for helping me out.
Sorry for top-posting. Better now?
