I have recently purchased an external hard drive to avoid having to lug
my laptop home from the office each night. Can anyone recommend a Sync
program to help keep my hard drives in step with one another? I use
iSync for my Address Book and Calendar, and love it because it updates
everything to the most current status, and gives a warning if you're
making changes more than 5% of the content. I hope there is a program
that works this way for syncing the actual hard drives.

I'm less concerned with archiving, and don't need to back up all the
previous drafts of documents, so most of the software I've come across
is much more than I need. All I need is something to keep my home and
office computers, and my portable drive, all current.

Hope someone can help!
Matt

Try 'FoldersSynchronizer X':

<http://www.softobe.com/products/flsy/pp.html>

$40 Flexible enough to do Syncs, Backups, or Exact (Smart)
Backups. Had to get used to the interface, though.

OTOH, for full clones and backups I use 'SuperDuper!:

http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

$28 Makes bootable clones and has "smart" copy (very quick)
but not really a FOLDER sync app.

You can read comments @ versiontracker.com.

I've picked up SuperDuper! and love it. Very intuitive and enough
features for me anyways. Now, a new question:

I've got a MacBook at work and a G4 PowerBook at home. On my MacBook I
can boot from the external hard drive because I made a clone of the
MacBook HD on the external HD... I just hold down Option during startup
and select it the same way I would to run Windows with BootCamp. But
on my PowerBook I can't seem to boot from the external hard drive.
Holding Option during startup doesn't work, nor does
option-command-shift-delete.

Any suggestions to help me boot from the external drive on my PowerBook
would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Matt

This link I found mentions it's possible to boot from a USB2 HD drive
to a PowerBook G4...
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20061017084322177
but I'm assuming the backup on the USB HD was made from the
PowerBook... In my case, I want to boot a backup that was made on my
intel MacBook. Please help!

Thank you both for your responses. Both helpful background. I'll stay
away from the trickery for now, and stick with the simple solutions
which are good enough for most of my purposes.

Matt-

Unless Apple comes out with a universal OS (perhaps 10.5?), It isn't
likely you will be able to boot a G4 from the Intel version of OS X.
The only way I can think of, would be to find a way to install BOTH
versions on the external HD. (Has anyone tried that?)

However, if you wanted to transfer either the MacBook or the backup HD
contents to the PB, it may be possible to do that with Migration
Assistant found in the Applications Utilities folder.

Thanks Fred,
I will give this a try. I've heard that this will copy my settings and
preferences etc. which would be very nice.
Thanks!

There is a fundamental problem: Intel and PowerPC Mac models have
different native partitioning schemes, and can only boot from a drive
formatted using their own partitioning scheme. (Both can read and write
data from a drive in the other partitioning scheme, but booting isn't
supported by Apple.)

For reference, PowerPC Mac models use the "APM" partitioning (Apple
Partition Map, which dates back to the Mac II in 1987) while Intel Mac
models use "GPT" (Globally unique identifier Partition Table).

Another problem is that the system software used on an Intel Mac won't
be able to boot a PowerPC Mac, and vice versa.

There is apparently a complex procedure which can be followed in order
to set up a drive which will be able to boot both computers, but I don't
have the details handy (and don't have an Intel Mac yet so I haven't
needed to do this myself). It probably involves at least two partitions
containing bootable systems (one Intel and the other PowerPC), and some
trickery to allow an Intel Mac to boot from an APM-formatted drive.

I don't recall where I read about this but try a Google search (or maybe
someone else can point you to the details).

Having two external hard drives (one able to boot one computer, the
other able to boot the other computer) is probably easier.
