You can help me out in a big way if you'll beta test the iRATE radio SWT build
for Mac OS X, and tell me about any bugs you find. It's working well enough now
to be useful and enjoyable, but the new 0.3 version won't be officially released
for the Mac for a few more days.
From the description of iRATE radio at
http://irate.sourceforge.net/ :
" iRATE radio is a collaborative filtering system for music. You rate the tracks
it downloads and the server uses your ratings and other people's to guess what
you'll like. The tracks are downloaded from websites which allow free and legal
downloads of their music."
iRATE radio is Free Software, being under the GNU General Public License.
Originally iRATE was written in Java using a user interface toolkit called Swing
that is published by Sun. Later, a new user interface was written using a
different GUI toolkit called SWT, that was developed by the Eclipse open source
project.
There are some advantages to SWT, but one reason it works better than Swing is
that it includes some platform-specific native code. iRATE's developers had
trouble getting SWT to work with iRATE on OS X because only a couple of the
developers had Macs. I'm a Mac developer, but did not have time to contribute
to the programming work until very recently.
I was able to get it working pretty well, but so far I'm the only person to have
tested it. I expect I can produce a finished 0.3 release soon, but I'd like to
have it more widely tested during the remaining time before the release.
If you'd like to help, go to
http://irate.sourceforge.net/download.unstable.html
and download the Mac .dmg file from the section of the page called "SWT client".
Right now the file to download is called "iRATE client swt 0.3rc6.dmg" but I
don't want to just give the URL of the file because I'm likely to post a new
version once I work on it some more.
There is one bad bug which you can easily avoid if you read the ReadMe file.
Once I get that bug fixed, we'll be releasing 0.3 for the Mac. If you can point
out any other bugs to me before then, I can fix them too. You can make iRATE
radio 0.3 better for everyone who uses it on a Mac.
Thanks for your help,
