..HierarchicalDock was posted today on Version Tracker

..it solves 2 of 3 problems i've had with the dock in 10.5

..it gives back the hierarchical menu
..and it puts my folder icons, unmolested by steve, back
in the dock
..the only problem is that when you tell it to open the
folder in the finder, it actually opens the folder's
parent folder... hopefully, an easy fix

..and it's free

..you'll find it here...

I hope you end up with a solution that satisfies you but I
don't understand how you could be so hung up about Dock
behaviour that it would prevent you from moving to Leopard.

If you don't like stacks etc then there is the option of using
something other than the Dock to navigate folders. I have never
looked at a folder in the dock and have never felt hampered in
any way. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

The finder and dock are there, I can't really delete them, and add-ons
increase the chances of instability. With hierarchical menus in the dock
it was possible to create folders via which I could get to any app or
document quickly and efficiently from any workspace, without leaving
that app and without opening any new apps or windows with a single
click, navigating through at most 4 or 5 levels (most commonly no more
than 2). This was for me by far the fastest and least cluttered way of
working, and needed no third-party add-on or utility.

Sure I could switch off stacks, and will, but that doesn't restore the
functionality.

Seein as I use it many times every day, and despise all the other things
I have tried out (which are less efficient and mostly do far more than
just simple navigation, which I do not want), I see no reason to upgrade
because this system works fine for me. Others don't use it the way I do
and for them there is no problem. I just hope there are enough for apple
to restore it.

Well I have never used any third-party add-on either. My commonly
used apps are in the dock so that is one click, and if I want anything
else then I use the Finder (except for the large chunk of time that
I am working in a terminal and using the command line).

On the other hand, I have not upgraded to Leopard myself because
Tiger works well for me. I will probably upgrade early in the New
Year because (amongst other reasons) eventually there are bound to
be Leopard only apps that I might want to use.
