I am considering buying a 20" intel core-2-duo Imac. When available,
Apple refurb store sells the new Imac for 1049, old one for 1099
(indicating perhaps no more than the higher list price of the older
machine)!
New:
20", 2 GHz, 250 GB HD, SD, ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO video....$1049
Old:
20", 2.16 GHz, 250 GB HD, SD, ATI Radeon X1600 video.....$1099
The old model has slightly faster CPU and reputed to have a better
screen.
New one has better graphics card, slightly faster bus (800 v 667),
faster DVD "dual-layer" burning (4x v 2X), slightly higher max RAM (4 v
3 MB) and perhaps other small enhancements.
New one is a tad lighter (19 v 20 lb) but neither is a laptop. :)
I would be curious to hear from the experts here which one you would
choose or why. (I know that 24" would be better, but let's say it seems
out of the budget for now.) >> Stay informed about: New Imac v Old Imac: Do you have an opinion? |

it depends what you want to use it for and if the glossy screen bothers
you. the old imac has a noticably better screen, and that could be
very important if you plan to use it for photo editing. on the other
hand, if you regularly run a lot of memory hungry applications and ones
where colour accuracy is not critical, the extra ram might be more
important, and that also assumes you will max it out. if you plan only
to install 2 gig of ram, it doesn't matter that one imac can exceed 3
gig. >> Stay informed about: New Imac v Old Imac: Do you have an opinion? |

Not much photo editing (so far) but we'll view a lot of those. The
glossy part doesn't bother me, but my SO does find the white look more
elegant (but not a decisive point according to her).
Does the glass cover on the new screen make it more secure?
RAM being cheap now, I'll probably max it out on either computer but we
don't do much RAM intense computing and it is unlikely that we'd notice
the difference on any app we run.
All in all I think the screen being the face of the computer you
interact with it all the time. So screen quality is in your face and
definitely has the impact. Behind the scene changes are less
noticeable. Don't know if many small incremental differences like
system bus (667 -> 800), dvd (2x -> 4x on dual layer), and graphics
card (ATI x1600 -> ATI HD2400 PRO) add up to be noticeable. >> Stay informed about: New Imac v Old Imac: Do you have an opinion? |

Thanks. And darn! Looks like the old one is better in things one deals
with all the time---the screen, the keyboard---while the new one is
better in subtle invisible internals.
What Apple needs is a modular like between Imac and Mac Pro, where I
could have chosen the computer, the screen and the keyboard
independently! No harm fantasizing.
I'll try to find some place that has both models (maybe difficult) to
see them together and pass this hard decision to my SO, if she prefers
the screen or cosmetics of the old one, for those you are always
dealing with.
If no preference there, I might pick the newer one for invisible
internal improvements.
Our present computer is a 667MHz G4 PB (titanium): We tend to stay with
what we have, rather than upgrade constantly. So whatever we choose
will likely be our computer for a few years. >> Stay informed about: New Imac v Old Imac: Do you have an opinion? |

Well, if your SO prefers the white I would go for that. Not just to
please her, but because the new iMac has a poor screen.
Actually, quite a lot of Macs have the problem with the screen, and it
is just that it happens to be more noticeable on the new machine,
because of screen size, viewing angle, etc.
Definitely DO NOT get the new iMac without taking a look first. Set the
desktop to a solid colour, sit down (if you can) in front of it, and
compare the colour at the top of the screen with that at the bottom.
