I'm looking for MAC/Windows compatible software to create and maintain a
relational database of images with keywords, etc.
What do you recommend?

I'm not dead sure what a "relational" database implies, but iView
MediaPro is a fairly widely used. well-liked and powerful image
cataloging/database application that's cross-platform for Mac and
Windows. (Not free, however.)

Take a good look at FileMaker.

If your looking to spend some bucks Extensis Portfolio is cross
platform and has alot of solutions for Digital Asset Management (DAM).
Servers with NetPublishing options. A great deal of options on this and
geared for creative groups. As I said bucks but really robust. I have
used it through the years on small scale and it worked well and only
let me down a couple of times with older file formats.

Canto Cumulous is another robust product. This has DAM products for
small business and large business. This will also cost a bit but the
ROI can be worthwhile of for some companies.

As mentioned already filemaker can be used as well. You will have to
create your own databases or use a already created one. You can publish
the database with one of the clients or purchase the server. Though
stick with the Windows version of the server the Mac server has got
issues that can destroy your databases. I have had it happen. I would
worry about performance issues with images and FileMaker though and
make sure the images are not stored in the database.

Depending on your money you setup a dedicated computer, Linux, Mac or
Windows. Run MySQL, and PHP and have a freelancer create a custom DAM
for your images. The interface could be completely web based and
scaleable. Chances are the freelancer would use some opensource product
to build most of it and tweek it to your needs. Ask for a quote,
estimate the cost of the computer and additional drive storage and
backup and see if it is cost effective.

I have been looking for an opensource DAM myself but have not found
anything that fits my needs.
