I've got an MPG movie, that I need to edit, image by image. To do this, I
need to pull the images out of the movie, and into my image editor.

I'm on a Macintosh.

For some reason, I can't access the images. If I open the movie and play
it, and stop the play showing one still image, and take a screenshot, the
screenshot only shows the image IF the movie itself is still open, otherwise
it's just a black square.

No matter how I try to get the images out, I get nothing but black squares
where the movie window is.

It is quite bizarre.

Is there a fix for this? A program I could download?

It seems MPEG is a distribution format, not an editing format.
You can export to another format (such as Quicktime), then access the
frames.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
