Hi

New to this group, (but not Newsnet!)

I've recently begun to revive my interest in IF games - mainly because
I've discovered I can play them on my Palm Tungsten...

I understand that all I need is a Z machine interpreter and some .z
Files to get going. I've managed to get the classic 'Advent' working
well with CliFrontz - and it seems to be quite stable so far... great
fun pretending to work in meetings... though I'd like to get the font
size a little bigger...

Now for the interesting bit...

Many years ago I bought a few Infocom titles - the big 'Lost
Treasures' Box full of 800k floppies! and the "Leather Goddesses of
Phobos' as a stand alone title, (complete with scratch and sniff card!),
both for Macintosh. They have been sitting on a bookshelf at home for an
awfully long time - I couldn't bring myself to throw them away...

I've just copied some of these files to my OS X machine thinking I could
just copy them over to the Palm or run them in the Zoom (OS X)
interpreter.

I read on a web site somewhere that once you had the files on a 'proper'
computer they could then run on any machine running a z machine
interpreter.

However - they seem to be native OS Classic files/programmes - not the
..z 'game' files - if that is the correct terminology.

Is there a way to get the plain story files out of these files so I can
play them on my Palm and / or the Zoom interpreter which runs quuite
nicely on OS X?.

Many thanks,

Keith

I see people have answered this on rec.games.int-fiction. But I'll
repeat it here:

Infocom's Mac applications had the game file data (what we now call
..z3 or .z5 files) in the data fork. On OSX, you can simply type

cp "Zork 1" "zork1.z3"

(in a Terminal window) to copy out the Z-code data, leaving the
executable part uncopied.

--Z
