Post subject: Installation of Windows XP Pro onto Virtual PC 6.1 on a G4 P
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>virtualpc (more info?)

Hi everyone,

To start off, I'm running the latest version of Virtual PC v6.1.1 on a
15' PowerBook G4 running the latest version of OS Panther. My
PowerBook has a 1.5 Ghz processor, 1 GB RAM and a 80 gig hard drive.

Here's my question: I had Virtual PC 6.0 running Windows 98, and now
I've upgraded to version 6.1.1 since I got my new PowerBook. Now what
I would like to do is install Windows XP Pro onto Virtual PC, so I can
trash Windows 98. I already have a Windows XP Pro CD from my office,
so I don't need to buy an OS pack. What is the best way to install
WIndows XP Pro from a non-Virtual PC CD into the program? I want my
hard drive to be large, and I'm aware that the max you can have at
set-up is 15 GB by going through the Virtual PC set-up assistant.

Can someone give me a rundown of the steps to take to install XP onto
Virtual PC?

I tried simply upgrading my old Win 98 drive to Win XP, which worked
fine, except for the fact that I could only expand the hard drive
image to 2 Gigs, which isn't even enough to get any Windows Updates...
so I need to know how to make a new hard drive image that's 15 GB,
boot from my XP CD, install it, and get it going.

Any advice you guys could give me would be a big help. I can't seem to
figure out how to install the new OS without one being present already
(ie: like changing the boot order so it boots directly from the
cd..etc) Thanks guys.

Check out my website for info on installing XP, while its not 100%
accurate with 6.1.1, since it was written for 6, its complete enough
to figure it out.

Don't upgrade your Win98, its much better to create a completely new
VM with XP as the original OS and then copy your data files from 98 to
XP.
