I'm trying to use the CD's that came with my iBook G4 to upgrade my old
iBook G3 that I'm giving to my mother. I was able to install Panther
using the OS X Install disks, but when I tried to install the
applications using the Software Restore disks I got an error. It
successfully installs the Software Restore application, which asks for
disk 1 to be reinserted. When I do that, it ejects the disk with the
message "That disc is not supported on this model of computer."

Is the disc really specific to the iBook G4 model? I thought that might
be an issue with the OS X discs, but I find it unlikely that the
application discs would require a particular model. Do I need to go out
and get a generic Panther installation kit to do this (I suppose I
*should* do that just to avoid license infringement).

It is. Long-standing practice.

they all default to going into a toilet. However, a person can redirect his
"standard output" to somewhere else, if he so chooses. - Jeremy Nixon<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Yep.

Your OS installer may or may not be compatible with other model
Macs. Your software restore discs definitely will not be.

As a hack-around, you can copy the disk image parts from each
software restore CD to a single folder on your hard drive and then
double-click part 1 to mount the hard drive image. At which point,
you can attempt drag/drop installation of the apps you find.

Some apps will work if you do this. Some may not. Try this at your
own risk.
