Post subject: Installing Tiger on a G4 533/DP w/ no DVD drive
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>system (more info?)

Hi,

Of my Tiger-compatible Macs, my G4 533/DP is the oldest. It has only a CD-RW
drive because a SuperDrive commanded such a premium in 2001, and as I
recall, a combo drive (which I certainly would have chosen) was backordered
or otherwise unavailable at the time.

I have heard talk that it would be possible to use Target Disk Mode between
my G4 and my Powerbook, and install Tiger onto the G4 that way. I have never
attempted software installation that way, let alone an OS installation.

Does this work? Are there any gotchas (assuming in advance that I take all
prudent backup measures)? Has anyone installed an OS this way successfully?

Otherwise, I will have to purchase an external burner. Staying at 10.3 is
NOT an option :)

TIA,
-W.M.

It certainly might work.

Note that it will also be possible to get Tiger on CDs. m.

Darn! I had intended to address that in my original post, but forgot :)

Since this is the only Tiger-capable Mac I have that lacks a DVD drive, I
feel that doing that would be sabotaging (or at least "clunkifying") the
Family Pack for my other DVD-equipped machines :)

Thanks again!

Yes, the requirement that you send them the original DVD in order to get
the CDs is a bit strong. However, they do permit you (indeed, they
encourage you) to copy the DVD before sending it back. So you end up
with both. m.

I did see that wording. Perhaps I am missing something, but it seems a
bit of a catch-22. Yes, you could make a disk image copy of the DVD,
but you would need a DVD burner to get a physical, bootable copy. If
you have a DVD burner, you probably don't need the CDs.

Perhaps they meant make a photo copy of the disk to show that you did
have it at one time in case the original disk gets lost in the mail or
while in Apple's possession.

If you don't have a DVD drive, how could you copy it? I don't
think they mean that.

The US site says "... make a copy of the ... install DVD ..."

The UK site says "Keep a photocopy of the ... Install DVD ..."

Quite so. But that was not the OP's question. He *does* have a DVD
burner. His question is whether, for some of his computers, he *also*
needs the CDs.

Perhaps they did. But my point remains: if the reason you are getting a
CD version is that *some* of your computers have a DVD reader but others
do not, and you would like to get the CD version without giving up the
DVD version, there is a solution.

That said, I think that Apple's decision to distribute this system on
DVD, *coupled* with an explicit claim that the system is compatible with
computers that can't read DVDs, is very odd. It's as if they want to
dump support for non-DVD computers but haven't got the guts, or
something. m.

As has been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, putting it on an
external drive and booting from there might work. Does the G4
533/DP have Firewire?

If you have to buy something, get an external drive. You might
need to experiment a bit to determine the best way to use it
though. E.g.,

1) use another computer you have and your DVDs to install a
system onto the external drive. Put the drive onto your G4 533
and boot the system from it (I assume that's possible with the
533) and then use the restore function of Disk Utility to
"restore" the entire external drive to the internal drive.

2) on another computer, Partition the external drive into a
partition for each of the install DVDs and load them into the
partions (one each) using the Disk Utility "restore" function.
Then boot from the first partition on the external while attached
to the 533. Run the install to the internal drive directly from
the external partitions.

Anyway, when its all done, you now have an external drive you can
use for backups or even repeating the installation on the G4 533
again at a later date when the updates come out to fix all the
bugs that will exist in the 10.4.0 release :-)
