Hi!
Our school is looking into purchasing Mac(s) (yay!), primarily for
video/audio editing. However, our budget basically means we could
afford either 1 PowerMac or 2 iMacs (with good RAM and a big
hard-drive, plus a screen for the PowerMac). Having 2 Macs would
obviously allow more students to use the computers at the same time,
but are the new Intel iMacs actually *slower* than the (bottom-end)
PowerMac G5? Is having two Macs going to be negated by having to wait
a "long time" for rendering or whatnot? We won't be doing anything
really intensive, mostly iMovie projects, possibly Final Cut Express
and Logic. I've been trying to find performance comparisons between
the iMacs and the PowerMac (no luck). Would you people recommend 1
PowerMac, or 2 iMacs?

Any suggestions, ideas, or comments would be great. Thanks!
Sean

get 2 imacs, they are plenty fast for final cut. just get lots of ram,
1GB or more, 1GB goes for about $70.

I vote for twin iMacs too but consider another factor: user accounts
Where will the user files (project, capture, exports) be saved. If the
answer is a centralized server then you have no problem but if you only
have the space between the two machines then adding nodes will be
troublesome. I am also studying video editing in my school and multiple
save locations are only a headache (especially with the wintels we got)
and think of a couple hundred students saving their files wherever they
damn please inside the two internal disks and the external ones (lets
assume total 1.5TB).
Having some kind of unification of the externals (RAID or something)
and making the internals almost read-only will solve most of the
problems. Using accounts for keeping track of perimissions is a must.
If possible get a MacMini (even the G4 will be fine) to handle user
accounts and act like a server (server tiger installed).
With the MacMini present, adding new machines will be easy and not
break consistency.

Another easy option for permission handling is a
week-old-files-get-deleted policy to keep things tidy, which will work
even if there is only two accounts present: admin and student

If you're making the next full-length animated movie *no* single
computer would cut it.

Having been around busy computer labs on campuses, I'd say students
might accept slower performance if they got twice as much access.
I vote iMacs in such a situation.

A lot of making use of a slower machine is understanding the apps first.
Say, if someone starts out an iMovie project, edits a few pieces and
then tries to compress it just to see how it looks, they are going to
spend a lot more time waiting around than the student who learns with
tiny files and then is able to put together his real project with
knowledge and facility.
Someone should spend some time getting the students to understand what
they are doing and learn their options and the steps involved -- it
makes a lot of difference when it comes tiime to compile or compress a
large project if they are really finished and understood the process of
the app to begin with.
